  1. I need to crop a 2gb avi file and also convert the audio from ADPCM to MP3.

The only software that I've tried that can almost to the job is Aimersoft video converter, but the audio is out of sync.

A list of good avi crop tools would be great.

I would try VirtualDub. Add the Lame MP3 ACM codec for MP3 encoding. If you use the 'Null transform' filter, then cropping becomes available. But you will have to re-encode. If the audio is a problem, save it out as a WAV with full audio processing, then add that back in and encode to MP3. I use VD Mod most of the time as the audio handling seems to be easier.

  3. Never had any real luck with Virtual dub. (maybe too many variables).

Something like Aimersoft video converter would be cool, if only the audio was in sync for large files.

When you say cropping do you mean cutting the top and bottom off or do you mean cutting out frames?

Either way, Virtualdub is the best tool for the job.

With the new version of Virtualdub, you can cut anywhere you want (not just keyframes) and use smart render to recode only the sections that you cut out.

As for cutting the top and bottom off (which is cropping), you will need to recode the whole movie.

The ADPCM audio may be a problem also and need to be saved as an uncompressed wave first.

I found this on the Virtualdub forum...

"Audio compression may impede use of delays. Some formats, particularly, ADPCM, use large block sizes that will limit the granularity of adjustments. The MP3 format used in AVI, on the other hand, has a hack in its format that prevents applications from seeing the "true" block size of the format. The result is generally junk produced at the beginning of the MP3 stream, which may not produce the desired delay depending on the player. An audio editor specifically designed to edit MPEG audio streams is required in these cases."
I would suggest learning to use Virtualdub. There are plenty of people who can help you on this website and the Virtualdub forums.

  6. Ok, tried the new Virtualdub Mpeg release and used the null transform filter and did the cropping and changed the audio to mp3 and video to divx 6.1.
The file produced will not play with nero or WMP.
I think it's the packed bitstream thing.
The file did play well with divx player.
Thing is, I want to use nero 7 to create a dvd (to play on standalone players).
How do I get my file to open and work with Nero 7 ?

    Thanks.

I was referring to Virtualdub 1.7.3 not Virtualdub MPEG-2. VDub MPEG-2 is a good program but it does not have the smart render feature that I was talking about.

Don't know why it won't play in Nero or WMP. It should play in both. You could try MPEG4modifier.

I don't use Nero to burn regular DVDs. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA). In this way I would crop the movie with Virtualdub and frameserve to TMPGEnc to create a DVD compliant MPEG2 file. Then I would create the DVD using TDA.

If creating a DVD to play in my DivX player then I usually compress to XviD with MP3 (I don't like the legal DivX codecs) and just make a Data DVD using Nero.
