I'm having trouble opening an avi video clip taken by a Canon ELPH SD600 digital camera using TMPGEnc Plus v2.56. The program keep telling me that the file format is not supported. Anyone have any idea how to go about doing this (like install codec or plugin)? Any help would be much appreciated.

At a wild guess it is probably mjpeg inside the quicktime container. If you don't have quicktime installed, try installing quicktime alternative to see if that helps.

Before doing so, test if you can open and play it with WMP.

  3. Other Canon cameras us MJPEG in an AVI container. You probably just need an MJPEG decoder. Try ffdshow or PicVideo MJPEG.

Sorry that it take too long for me to to get back to this post. I'm on vacation so I'm on the road with no net access some of the time. I got TVC to work for the conversion. Many thanks to those whose responded to this post.

    Hi

I am having a similar problem. I have a Canon A550 which I have used to capture some video clips. I want to edit them in virtualdub before burning them to a DVD. Quicktime plays the files back fine, but any other player I use e.g WMP, Virtuadub doesn't want to know.

Can someone help me get virtuadub to see the files?
Could it possibly be something to do with not installing the cameras software (I just drag and drop from My Computer)

    Thanks
    Nick

What container (AVI, MOV, MP4, etc) and what codecs? GSpot can tell you all these things.

    Thanks jagabo

Have just installed and run that, and it an avi file (which is the bit I knew!)
It says its codec is MJPG - name Motion JPEG.
    Codec(s) are installed.
Is there anything I can do to make these editable in virtualdub?

    Thanks

  8. VirtualDub has an MJPEG decoder built it. I wonder why it's not working. You can try the PicVideo MJPEG codec or install ffdshow and enable its VFW MJPEG decoder.

If you continue having problems upload a small sample and I'll take a look at it.
