My new Dell system came with Roxio Creator DE Version: 9.0.116 pre installed. I have Nero 6 from my old system. Which is the better to use? Roxio is just their demo type whereas my Nero 6 is the full version. I am reasonably happy with Nero and unless someone can give me some compelling reasons to switch to Roxio I am just considering removing it all and installing my Nero.

I use it primarily for burning Home videos and Divx (avi's). I use Wombles video wizard for my editing.

I would go with Nero 6, myself. It's still bloatware, but it has it's uses. Don't install InCD, though. As long as you just use Nero for burning, it's a decent program. For encoding or authoring, there are many better programs.

I would also add ImgBurn to your system. It replaces a lot of Nero burning functions and works better than Nero most times.

I haven't used Nero for anything in a number of years because, in the early days of burning CDs, I tried it several times and created some nice shiney coasters.

Ever since, I've used Roxio for AUDIO burning only. I only use IMGBurn for video now as Roxio burned me a time or two.

The long and short of it is, if you do any audio burning, you might want to contemplate hanging on to Roxio for that purpose only.

In retrospect, I'm sure Nero has gotten better (not knocking it by any means), but I've just chosen to leave it alone as I've found what works for me.

Friends don't let friends use Roxio - EVER.

While Nero certainly isn't perfect, I wouldn't make that kind of statement about it. Nero is OK for some things (audio CDs and data discs) and it's easy for newbies to use until they are ready to use better programs ImgBurn. Use Nero. It's much better than Roxio.

  5. Roxio is part of crapware comes with Dell. I used Nero burning ROM with zero issue.

Roxio had a bad reputation for breaking other apps that were installed on the same system with it.

Roxio's CD Creator is bad. Nero is less bad, after all.
But I've been seriously thinking of downgrading it
from ver. 6.x to 5.x. Versions 6 do not include the
documentation, you have to download it, and when you
go read it, you find out it is prettily outdated. Anyway, I have
already emptied the folders of the other Ahead's applications
I have never used or will never use again
(Recoder, Vision Express, InCD, ImageDrive, Cover Editor, etc).

I liked Nero 5.5, but it wouldn't work with my newer burners, so I had to update. I have 6.6.0.13 and I won't update that till I have to. And the only part of the package I use is Nero Burning ROM. I'd be happy to just delete the rest of it. But I use ImgBurn mostly now anyway. and Nero only for CD data discs.

Can imgburn be used to make DVD data discs ie: divx files?

For DVD data files with ImgBurn, use 'Build' mode. Works fine for them.

I use Roxio 8 to capture video from my camcorder in mpeg2 format. I use Womble mpeg video wizard to edit. I use Roxio to burn audio disks & data video disks, all with great success. Not a coaster in the bunch. I've never had very good luck with Nero.

Too complicated compared to Nero for this particular task. I use a desktop shortcut to point to Nero Express and I am right there entering files. Imgburn build seems to default to iso for the write mode.

Nero has never failed me yet on creating data disks that work. One and only time I tried Roxio the files didn't work properly in my dvd.

Go with what works I guess.

Because comparing a screenshot that depicts burning a single ISO file to a screenshot that depicts creating a complex Super Video CD menu is like comparing apples to skyscrapers?

Yeah, I know. Thing is, Nero shows the same kind of UI even if you're writing one single data file to disk. So does ImgBurn. My point is, ImgBurn can only seem "complicated" to a hardened Nero user.

    I know; I just couldn't resist a little good-natured chain-yanking.

Well this is what I get from my desktop shortcut, not the image posted. When I click on "add", it remembers my last choice taking me to my divx files.

Not putting down imgburn as I am sure it is much superior to Nero for other tasks

I actually liked the OLD Roxio Easy CD Creator much better than Nero....and I'd still be using it today (along with another great app called Audiocatalyst) if it would run on XP/SP2.

    Nowadays?....Roxio vs. Nero?
    Simple.... Prassi Ones

All you have to do it set "Output" to "Device" instead of "Image File". Easy.

Thanks for the heads up Jim!

By the way anyone else lazy like me who wants to just open Nero Express at the ap in my first post just create a desktop shortcut and use this as the path

    "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\nero.exe" /w /New:ISODisc

I found a few spots and experimented until I found switch that worked for me.

I've been using Nero 7 for a couple of years now buring DVD movies and KVCDs. NEVER had a problem and that's after couple of hundred burns!! I only use Nero Burning ROM though, tried Express on a couple of CDs and ended up with coasters. I like their Label Maker too. Recode is often compared to DVD Shrink, but it's actually a more powerful tool as it can also create Nero Digital (AVC) files.

Oh, and if any one cares, NBROM also supports BD and HDDVD.
