  1. Hello, just have a quick question. This has been bugging me for some time and it seems to be re-occuring. I know this will point more towards the DVD player itself but maybe one of you has had this problem and found ways to fix it.
I have 2 movies, both are divx files.. I use "Winavi Video convertor" to transfer them into DVD files and I save them on my HD and burn them using "Roxio Disc Copier" later. Never really had too many problems doing this, it's simple and it pretty much does what I need to do.
I burned the movies on Memorex DVD-R. (not on the same disc). They are both converted and burned the exact same way. I take the movies to friends and families houses to watch. My brothers DVD will play one disc fine, and the other disc will play in black & white and the screen will start scrolling, etc. And when I go to my friends house, the disc that played fine on my brothers is the one going b & w, and the one that was b & w is the one playing fine. (did that make sense)

Anyway, I'm just wondering if any body else has had the same problem and is there a tool to fix it.

    Thanks!

black and white and scrolling is usually a sign of PAL playback on NTSC equipment. At a guess, the DVD player is able to play PAL, but instead of converting it to NTSC for display, it is outputting PAL to the TV. Normally this is the ideal situation, however if the TV is NTSC only then you get the symptoms you are seeing.

The only way to fix the problem is to convert all your movies to whatever is the native format for your country. You haven't filled one in, but I will assume the US because PAL countries can usually play anything.

  3. You know I never throught of that, I appreciate it. I just checked out my settings and it was set on auto.. so I will just target ntsc and see what happens.

Be prepared for jerkiness in the converted video. WinAVI is not a very good encoders, and it will simply encode 25 fps PAL to 29.97 fps NTSC by duplicating frames. It's not very subtle. Zooms and pans are where you will see it.

  5. Any programs you suggest? I try to steer away from tmpgnc because for me it's just time consuming, I like simple programs such as winavi. I really dont have a need to convert much since the dvd players these days are divx compatible

If your player(s) are DivX compatible, why involve WinAVI et al at all?

  7. I have 3 players that are divx compatible, I'm just talking about for other people that don't have it. And besides that, it's bugging me.

Not many "converters" do PAL->NTSC conversions nicely. Try convertx2dvd or FAVC - they seem to handle it better (=the right way) than most.
