I have a normal, 32" Sony CRT TV. (I live in the US, NTSC all the way around.) I'm hooking my Phillips DVP5982 DVD player to my TV via the red/yellow/white cables. I've used my DVP5982 for months to watch DVD movies, Xvids, everything and have had no problems. Recently, my wife purchased about 5 Bollywood movies from a little store a few weeks ago and one night she watched two of the movies back to back, no problem. (forgot to check and see if the movies were NTSC or PAL, maybe this plays a factor?) Turned the DVD player off and the next night she wanted to watch something else on the DVD player and yelled for me because it was coming up black. If you put a movie in, you can hear it, just no video. I checked all the cables and took the player to another TV and used different cables and same problem, no video but you could hear it. Since it was only $60, I decided to just buy a new one instead of getting it fixed. Came home with the new one and tested it with a normal DVD and no problem. I figured it was a random fluke and it just died on us. Well, she watched another Indian movie and the next night, we turned the DVD player on and it had no video, but had audio. This is when I put 2 and 2 together and thought it was something with the Indian movies. Well, off to the store to buy a THIRD DVP5982. Against my better judgement, I put in one of those Indian movies for 2 minutes..... removed it out and turned off the DVD player. Turned it back on and surprise surprise, no video. What the heck is the problem? Maybe the movies are in PAL and the DVD player is getting "stuck" outputting that signal?! I have no clue as to how watching these movies is killing my DVP5982 but here I am with 3 units all with the exact same problem after watching those movies. Incase the DVP5982 is junk, what's a good replacement player (with USB support) that plays everything like the Phillips and is cheap, like the Phillips.

Any idea what the heck is going on?

Been through all those and couldn't get it working. I'm going to stop tonight and buy a 4th unit and will unfortunately have to tell my wife that she can't play those movies any more. I might send one of them off for warranty repair because I'm very interested in why those movies seem to trigger the problem. But even if I do that, warranty will probably just replace the entire circuit board that houses the RCA plugs without diagnosing the source of the problem.

  4. Check to see if the player is set up to output NTSC, not PAL. Don't use the Auto or Multi setting as it will switch between NTSC and PAL depending on the DVD.

Check for a firmware update from Philips.

  5. This is just a small start .. next it will be our washing machines, our radio's and our microwaves. then it will be our cars .. following that .. they invade a defenceless starving uninformed US of A.

Why, oh Why will our Govt not take this threat to Homeland security seriously??

    I bet thats the problem

If you send one off for repair and this is the problem, they might charge you.. but seeing as how you've bought three (four?) they might take pity

The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.
