I’m not an expert but for some reason when I use my Nero vision to convert a video file to DVD format, the finish product when played back is choppy. The actual quality of the video is not bad but it doesn’t playback smoothly. I use other video editing programs (convertxdvd) as well and they seem to do better on playback but not as good quality. Like I said I’m not an expert video editor but I would like to learn some basics to be able to get better video. Is there any setting that needs to be changed on Nero to avoid that from happening? Or does Nero just suck as a program. Any advice on some other editing programs that work well even if free?
    Thanks in advance

That's the general feeling. It sucks.

    "a video file" is vague...
as is your description of what you are doing.
gspot or mediainfo to provide info on the source video, and info on your encoding settings are neeed.
not that probability is high you'll find a nero encoder user...

you keep saying editing, but all references have been to encoding.

this isn't an advanced conversion question.

convertx is a good choice, scores high regarding usability.
if you want better, HC is a free mpeg2 encoder of excellent quality.
you can try using it with a frotend like favc.
or get gritty and fly solo.

look up a guide or two.
    be specific.

Sorry, I don't post here very often, I wasn't aware of how advance the question is supposed to be.
    Thanks anyway for the response.

This is often the result of poor format conversion (PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL). Most all-in-one software solutions do this poorly. Unfortunately, if you are in the US then you often have to convert PAL to NTSC or buy a new DVD player capable of playing back PAL material.

FAVC is one program that can do format conversion correctly, however it is far slower than Nero or ConvertXtoDVD because it uses higher quality encoding methods.
