Newbie question: Problem with synchronization

Hi people !!

I'm needing some help. I have a movie (.avi) and subtitle for it. The problem is that the subtitle isn't synchronized with the movie.... In the beggining of the mevie, the difference between them is just 5 seconds. In the end is more than 13 minutes. Doing some research, I think that that the movie (.avi) and the legend belongs to different formats (PAL and NTSC), to explain why the difference between them keeps increasing ...

The problem is that I didn't find a automatized way to resynchronize the legend with the correct timming. The methods that I found were the manual methods. Some programs helps, but in the end, I have to type or click the time of each dialog. These methods become a problem since the movie has 6 hours long and more than 7000 dialogs ... That's why I'm posting here ... Does anyone know a easier way to resynchronize the legends? Is there a program or something to help ??

Yes, there's an easier way - a much easier way. How you do it depends at least partly on the subtitle format you have. If SRT, then SubtitleCreator, among other programs, can do it. You need to know which is from a PAL source and which is from an NTSC source. Open the AVI in GSpot to find out. If 25fps, it's PAL and your subs are NTSC. If 23.976fps, your AVI is NTSC and the subs are PAL. First do the PAL<->NTSC conversion. Then synch them so the beginnings match up. I'd suggest making a backup of the subs before beginning. That way, if you mess up, you'll always have the original subs with which to try again.

Open the subs in SubtitleCreator (File->Open Text Subtitles). Go Synchronize->Convert Frame Rate. If you have PAL subs being changed to NTSC subs, Apply 25.00->23.976. Otherwise do it the other way around. Save it and test. If done correctly, the subs should be off by the same amount all the way through. Then go Synchronize->Set Time Delay(-/+) and adjust them by the correct amount. It may take a few tries until you get it just right.

If you have some other kind of text based subtitles (SSA, SUB, etc.), convert to SRT first. I use SubResynch for that. It comes in the VobSub package. Good luck.
