Hey guys. I downloaded 4 movies yesterday and they're all in .avi format. When I view them on the computer, they work perfectly with crisp resolution and perfect sound. However, after I burned one of the movies to a DVD, it didn't work in my DVD player. What could be the problem?

Here are the steps I did:

    1) Burned .avi file to a 4.7GB 16x DVD using Windows DVD Maker. (Should I use a better burning program?).
    2) Put the DVD in my DVD player.
    3) When I hit play, the first 3 seconds of the movie show up but then it just stops.
    4) The error that showed up was something along the lines of "This DVD cannot be read".

    What could be the problem?

Besides the options that the DVD could be scratched (didn't check).

    Convert with FAVC/DVD Flick.
Only put 2 hours or less per disc (one movie)
    Test play before you burn
    Burn to disc with Imgburn

I'm surprised WDM worked for a conversion like that at all. WDM is a converter, not a burning program, so something else did the burning, probably the Windows burning program.

But try ConvertXToDVD as it is better suited to converting videos off the net to DVD. And use ImgBurn for the burning part.

Alternatively, try the freeware FAVC and ImgBurn. BTW, many of those videos use MP3 VBR audio, which can cause serious audio/video sync problems. I would check them with Gspot 2.70 before converting.

Lastly, this may all be a media problem, depending on your DVD media. Or it may be a incompatibility with the media and your burner and the player and even the burning program.

Did you try the burned DVD in your computer?

Did you actually convert the AVI to DVD format or did you just burn a data disc? What you describe could happen if your DVD player supports Divx and you burned a data disc (you did NOT conver the file to DVD format but just ended up burning it as is to a DVD) and there is something in the Divx file that your player doesn't like such as packed bit stream or something else.

We don't have enough info on what you did or what your equipment is to do anything but just make guesses. It could even be that you burned to DVD+RW or DVD-RW and didn't tell us and your DVD player is old and doesn't like these discs but what you did would have worked if you had burned to DVD-R or DVD+R instead.

I just took the .avi program, and copied it to the "DVD" icon in My Computer. It said "would you like to use Windows DVD Maker to burn this DVD" and i hit yes.

You may also want to test the DVD on your PC and on another DVD player. If it works in either one, then you are having media issues.

Otherwise, as noted above, your issue is likely conversion related.
