Recently I switched from Nero 7 to Nero 8.
Yesterday, I tried to import a 1.5 hrs avi file to Nero Vision and burned to DVD but failed. Obviously, this avi file is too large to burn into one DVD in high quality.
Is there any solution to automatically split this large video file into DVDs ? Something like when the first DVD is full, Nero Vision will warn me to insert the second DVD or even third.... Or, can I use double layer DVD in Nero Vision to burn this large avi file (19 GB) ?
I tried Windows Movie Maker but no luck. Can Movie Edit Pro 12 help ?
Or, how can I compress this large avi file to fit into DVD ? Some suggest DVD-9 buring, do I need some special DVD-9 disc to get the job done ?
Thanks.

I don't think it can split automatically. But you should be able to get 1.5 hours/DVD in pretty good quality. What is your source video? avi divx/xvid files or avi dv?
-
I think it is avi dv.
I captured two video footage (speech) from my DV camcorder and merge them into one avi file for DVD(s) burning -
1.5 hour in DV avi should work for DVD5 once converted to Mpeg2.
It most likely is DV avi since it is from your camcorder unless you use video capture card.
What failed, export from Nero or burning?
What software did you use to download to your computer? -
I used WinDV to capture video from DV camcorder to computer.
After editing, I tried to covert this 19GB avi file to DVD by Nero Vision (Nero 8). After Neor Vision running for 1.5 hours, the program alerted me that the burning was failed. When I turned the DVD, I still saw the burning marks on the other side of DVD but unable to play it from computer or home DVD player.
Can I burn it to multi DVDs by Nero Vision without manually splitting the footage ?
What is DVD5 ? -
If Nerovision tried to burn the movie, it probably thought it would fit.
You may need to diagnose a burning problem.
Start by providing information about your burner (maker and model), the media (brand and mediaID) and the Nero log. -
If you use Nero Vision option Make DVD-Import file, it will compress your file to single (DVD5) or dual (DVD9) layer DVD.
Bottom toolbar either say DVD or if you open, you can choose DVD9 beside other options.
4.7GB (DVD5) for 1.5 hour should be fine.
Not that Nero is the best, but if that's what you have use it, or you can try other suggested options. -
Thanks all for your help.
I tried ConvertXtoDVD trial version and it works. To bad it's not free now. -
My next question.
What DVD burning software can help me to burn multi DVD discs if the video file is way too large ? Something like to alert me to insert next DVD in the burning process, when the previous one is full ? -

There is an upper limit to the bitrate allowed on DVD. At the highest bitrate you can fit a little over an hour on a single layer disc. If you encode carefully you can get 2 hours of of good quality on a single layer disc.
30GB means nothing without knowing the format and compression used. For example, 30 GB is only 3 hours of DV, which could be squeezed onto a single layer disc at a pinch, or spread over 2 discs. Also, you would rarely put the entire 3 hours on a disc, as no-one would watch it. Once edited down, you don't need as much space. Even if you had 6 hours on a 30GB HDD recorder, chances are there is less than 2 hours of useable footage in most cases.Read my blog here.

One of my assignment is to record 7 hours of presentation/conference in one day hearing.
I think the JVC 60GB hard drive camcorder could be the most convenient device to capture 7.5 high quality hours of footage without changing DV tapes. There is little chance to trim or edit the footage after the recording becase we need the whole thing as evidence. I asked Best Buy sales about the best way to transfer all 7 hours video to multi DVDs without losing a frame. No luck, they could not give me solid answers. I email to JVC but they never response !!!
I need to find a less trouble method for every workers in the office to handle. -
If it is basically talking heads then you can probably get away with VCD resolution and put it all on one disc. Use FAVC to encode. It has a VCD resolution setting, and HCEnc is a great encoder for low bitrates.
Edit out a 5 - 10 minute representative segment, and encode it at different resolutions (D1, half-D1 and VCD) and also try Full-D1 at different bitrates. This will tell you what works best for your situation, and wont take more than an hour to do. Once you know what works, you can complete the project.
Basically though, your options are
Full-D1 over 3 - 7 discs (depending on quality needs)
Half-D1 on 2 - 3 discs
VCD on 1 discRead my blog here.

Hi everyone.... I have my own dilemma & I would be sooooo grateful for ANY help if possible. I have a ton of AVI videos & I was using Pinnacle to create a DVD. I am having trouble figuring out how to make the DVD length over 2hrs long. I need to burn all my AVI files to DVDs but, they MUST be somewhere between 2-3 hours long each. The quality of them does not need to be excellent... Thanks in advance for any info anyone may have..
