I have been a happy user of TMPGEnc for many years but recently I started to use their latest version 4XP because of its Dolby Digital sound capabilities however I have hit a snag that I can't explain.
I nearly always use the XDVD encoding capabilities of TMPGEnc usually to create a DVD of TV episodes. A 350MB Xvid when encoded with TMPGEnc version 2.524.63.181 produces a mpg2 file of approx 405MB this is the same when using cbr or vbr encoding. If I encode the same size file with TMPGEnc 4XP then using cbr again the resulting mpg2 file is approx 405MB in size but if in 4XP I use the vbr method the resulting file is only 325MB in size. I have tried increasing the "average" setting in vbr mode to its maximum but the resulting file size is still approx 325MB.
Any help, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Standard dvd, or change gop length to something in between.
Xdvd profile has rate control set to vbr and greyed out.
Why use cbr when it's designed to work with vbr?
I've tested and noticed it'll max out at about an average of 5500 kbits/s despite setting vbr averages above that.
But that's way above what you are describing.
Also might want to look for support from pegasys. -
