Ok time for a public opinion poll on music preferences. This time a couple of heavy hitters for rock.

I like both a lot but I think Springsteen might get an edge for me in overall song strength (ie more pop than rock). BUT I give a big thumbs up to local Michagander SEGER

So which do you like more? Do you like both the same??? Neither??

"Born to Run" - good song, but it all went downhill from there. He edges out on Seger because his guitarist is Silvio on the Sopranos.

I couldn't agree more. Early stuff is very good. so are a few of Springsteen's later tunes but for the most part later stuff to me is nothing special. I'm more into fusion and Springsteen did bring us David Sancious. So he gets for that.

    Oooooh, tuff call.

Depends on my mood at the time I guess.

Maybe even on the scale but in different directions.

Springsteen might have the drive but Seger has the soul.

I'll give them an even split

Roc/Pop is fine, but I really don't care much for these guys.

Due to ignorance I have to say Springsteen - I am not that familiar with the works of Seger. Is that something I ought to catch up on?

I realize that this Poll thing must be hard-to-do i.e., coming up with a new poll every week or so.

    BUT ...

    This poll is ridicules!

Who gives a flying F about either of these two loser "rock/pop" stars?

Talk about uninspired ... there isn't even a STAR WARS option?!?!?

Were you like sick this week or something?

I mean man I love ya and support you but one has to draw a line at some point and this particular poll is just ... it's very poor.

Go back like twenty years in a time machine to see them in all of their glory.

I would say that both are talented no doubt, but neither was really like ever on my top ten list of favorites, just filler for the radio airwaves.

Lighten up, offer some suggestions, answer the poll and move along. Not every poll is going to appeal to everybody.

While polls like "Doggy style or Missionary" or "Buggers, eat them, wipe them or flick them" or "Favorite breast size" may draw a bigger crowd, I don't quite think they are front page material.

Yes...Maybe this poll should have had a title more like "Back in the Day"

But, being one of the older members (I believe) on this forum, maybe I have
somewhat of a greater appreciation for both the men's music. (I voted "Both")

It might be because of this, I believe both of these artist's music does trancend
time, and can speak to music fans of all ages.

How can you hear the rockin' rhythm of Seger's "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" or the
soulful "Turn the Page"...and not feel the man himself.

As for Bruce Springsteen...rockers like "Born to Run" & "Born in the U.S.A." are
songs that, "Walk the Walk"...very few...can deny that.

Times change...public's taste in music changes...
(can you remember when there was NO Rap music on MTV...I can)

I for one, think these guys songs endure.

    My two cents...end of preach...

I've never owned anything from either of them....not even a "45". Both are and were terribly overrated.

I never owned any of their stuff either, and to be fair, sometimes it is the deeper cuts that will be the determining factor to me of a performers true talent. Without ever hearing anything other than the stuff on the airways I have no way to really judge their real talent. Everyone knows that the stuff played on the airways is for the target audience of teenage girls and has to meet the commercial formula of the big money companies. Go figure. (This is possibly a reason why "real" men won't admit to likeing them)

As for overrated... well, maybe, but who is doing the overrating? If it is the recording companies and concert promoters, then that is just "Hype" and to be somewhat expected, after all, they are after your money. If it is the fans or audience, then maybe it is not an overrating but rather a true like for the music.

I think this is a tuff call as stated before. Here we have two guys that have kind of stood the test of time and in my opinion were only ever like "B" rated artist. (No doubt that a live performance could change mine or anyone elses opinion). Tuff also because (Not knowing the full spectrum of either) I think that they are two different styles or taste almost as wide as country and hard rock. Off of the top of my head and my failing memory I said that one has soul and the other the drive, and I kind of still stand by that.

I shouldn't knock anyones taste in music, but I say say that hands down they beat alot of the new crap that is comming out these days (And there was new crap in the days of old as well). And, yes, I remember when MTV played music.

I voted both, but they are still not on my top ten list.

I'm with hech54. Both were overrated. I used to take a lot of heat from my friends about Seger, (him being a Michigander and all), but I just never thought he was that good..

I never liked Springsteen much. His voice is too strained. It sounds like he's trying to sing without opening his mouth too wide.

Bob Seger is one of those "4 hit wonders." He's got 3 or 4 really good songs and the rest just kinda barely get the job done. But Turn the Page is still one of my all-time favorite songs so he gets my vote.

  18. Seger! Definately, Bob's the man hands down. Bruce is way too overrated IMO ... he's good and all don't get me wrong but I'm just a little BrucedOUT!

On a personal note - I'd take Rod Stewart over both Seger and Springsteen though, back in those good ol' days that is.

    Here's to another fellow Michigander!

    Hi,

FulciLives must've watched too much Fulci over the holidays ;-b. I think both of these artists have earned their place in Rock (Ancient) History. For my money Springsteen's reach exceeded his grasp sometimes, kind of like William Shakespeare meets Phil Spector!? Bob Seger was the opposite, he didn't seem to try to reach too far beyond his Blue Collar roots, and so the intellectual critics don't give him his due. Even James Brown (RIP) would've been hard pressed to out work Springsteen on stage though, some of those early shows went on for over 3 hours!!! Cool poll Yodester!

  20. Definitely Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band !

Probably his two most popular tunes were "Turn the Page" and "Old Time Rock and Roll" both of which get quite a bit of air play at least in my neck of the woods. If you are a Metallica fan you would probably be familiar with their cover of "turn the Page", quite well done I might add. He's one of those artists where you know the tunes but not who sings them.

    ................
As far as the poll... I'm with Fulci but I'll pick Springsteen. :P No offense Yoda but many of the younger generation here probably never even heard of either and the old guys here are probably a little sick of hearing "Born to Run" and the aforementioned "Turn the Page". I think I can easily say I've both more than enough times for a lifetime,

Both Springsteen and Seger have more talent than 99% of todays groups. I enjoy both of their music, but choose Seger over Springsteen by a little bit. The majority of present day music is unbearable. That is why CD sales are down; very little good music is being produced. Quite frankly, I am surprised as to what passes off as music these days.

This statement is as old as recorded music, though I also concur. I imprinted on pop music in the late sixties/early seventies when I was a preteen and, IMO, AM pop radio stations actually played great tunes, and that has "tainted" me ever since. I voted for neither: as for Seger and Springsteen, I couldn't stand to hear more than one of their songs in a row, though both had a few great songs. Now if Jimi Hendrix was on that list...(excessive comment deleted)

I forgot to give Seger special credit for his lyrics in "Turn the Page" about Tinnitus:
Later in the evening when you lie awake in bed with the echo from the amplifiers ringing in your head.
If you suffer from it, you know how much it really sucks when you wake up at 3:30 AM with a tea kettle going off in you ears that won't go away.

I'll Quote my dad when first hearing me play a "Jimi Hendrix Experience" album
on the families console record player:

    "TURN THAT SH#T OFF!"

Now I'll Quote myself...upon first hearing a Rap song my son was playing on the
    families CD player
