Hello, my name is Herb and I am new not only to this forum but to video editing/downloading all together.

I have looked over this site's great HOW TO's and the newby basics but I am still a little unclear on the specifics to the task i want to do

    1. download videos from youtube
    (experimenting with: http://keepvid.com/)

    2. convert the download youtube file from the UNKNOWN/ALL FILE format into a format I can actually work with

    3. edit the converted file (only want to save certain parts of the video)

    4. convert the saved parts of the video into MPG4 or MOV or etc.

if you need any more details, just reply

thanks so much for any help

SUPER should be able to convert YouTube .flv files to something else you can work with

What sort of editing do you need to do ?

Simple cut/append edits can be done with virtualdub or AVIDemux. If you are just grabbing a segment out of a clip, either these will do the job.

VideoReDo and MPEGVCR are both excellent MPEG video editors, but both are commercial products, not freeware. I'm not real fond of freeware editing solutions as I believe you get what you pay for (or in this case, don't expect much from a freeware editor), but to each his own. You can try both VideoReDo and MPEGVCR before you buy them.

VideoReDo and MPEGVCR are both fine solutions, but editing is best done with an uncompressed or "lossless" format. I would take the YouTube *.flv file and throw it into SUPER and convert to Huffyuv AVI file (if HDD space is a non-issue, depending on length of video) and then edit from there. Your choice of editing apps is now virtually unlimited.

If you're familiar/comfortable with VirtualDub then guns1inger's suggestion is a good way to go.

This is way overkill given the quality of most YouTube videos. Judging from your post, I'd say that you're one of those "It sucks if it's not uncompressed AVI" people. You're certainly entitled to your opinion on that, but for the vast majority of us, MPEG is good enough. Besides, editors like I suggested don't re-encode, so there should be no quality loss, even if you are working with MPEG.

The original poster can certainly test for himself if converting to AVI, editing and converting to MPEG is any better than just converting to MPEG and editing there. I doubt he'll notice a difference except it will take a lot more time and disk space to go to AVI first.

Grow up. It was just a suggestion. Let the posts speak to the original poster as he sees fit. Don't knock a post just because it's something you wouldn't do. It was merely one way to do it. The idea behind converting to uncompressed or lossless AVI is not to improve quality. That was never even implied. The idea was to offer more choice into editing possibilities.

I had no idea of the number of options I had.
I am not real worried about quality, just wanted to get the job done.

Yes, I just want to highlight say 30 minutes in the middle of a 2 minute video.

I downloaded the software you all suggested and will work on it in a few days, will get back to you then.

    Thanks for all your help.

I downloaded a video and then went to encode it using Super, but got an error message (see image attachment)

my concern is that when i download the videos they arent saved under the right format
it says under properties for file type: file

    error.bmp
