I played this commercial NTSC tape on a JVC HR-S7611, the Panasonic ES10 was in NTSC mode, but the passthroughed and the recorded picture is B/W with vertical color lines, like this:

Connections: S-Video
JVC to TV via S-Video: all OK (colour picture)
What's this?

The european spec Panasonic DMR can only record NTSC from a composite true 3.58Mhz NTSC source. It cannot record component NTSC or an NTSC color signal which has been converted to 4.43Mhz by another player.
