I just bought a 15-pack of double-layer DVD+R discs that are rated at a maximum of 2.4x. However, when trying to burn in Nero or Roxio, the minimum I can select is 4x. I've tried everything but cannot get it to burn at 2.4x, or even 2x.

When I eject the disc, then I can select a lower speed, but when I put it back in the selection disappears. So this would lead me to believe it's the media rather than my drive, but this just isn't possible. The media is clearly labeled as 2.4x, and is specific about not burning higher than that. Is there any solution to this?

I spent $40 on this pack of discs, and taking them back isn't an option. Is it really possible that a dvd burner has a MINIMUM burn speed? If so, what the heck is the point? I upgraded to the latest firmware and still no go. I have a Dell with some generic DVD writer in it, I just bought the system about a month ago. Any help is appreciated

Single layer DVD media may not burn properly at a very low speeds, such as 16X media at 2X, but that wouldn't apply to dual layer discs. I would try ImgBurn. It's freeware and you can set the burn speed down to 1X if you want to.

It also does a much better job of burning DL that Nero or most any other burning program.

  3. ImgBurn will do it. ImgBurn should be used for ALL DVD burning IMO, SL and especially DL. It's simply the best!

It looks like ImgBurn only burnes image files though. Can you do compilations as well, such as videos and pictures? Or do I have to create an image from those files first, using something such as Nero, and then burn the image file with ImgBurn?

ImgBurn can burn VIDEO_TS folders by using the 'Build' mode. I have also burned CD BIN/CUE files with it.

For just a DVD data disc, Nero or most any program is fine. DL is a special case and even with the best setup, burner and software is not always a sure thing. You should also be aware of potential layer break problems with DL DVDs.

I agree. Here's a guide to help burn DL VIDEO_TS folders with ImgBurn (Build Mode) and setting layer break:

For burning SL VIDEO_TS folders w/ImgBurn in Build Mode:

Ok, but my main problem here is burning data discs, and you suggest nero but I can only select a speed as low as 4x (and in Roxio as well), when my DL media is rated at 2.4x.
Thanks for the tips from both of you guys though about video burning, that will help when copying or burning a video disc, which I do often.

You could use Folder2Iso to create the ISO your data. After the ISO is build, just burn it with ImgBurn.

ImgBurn can burn data direct to DVDs as well. Just use "Build" mode, and select the files you want to burn. I've done all three types of burning with it: data, video folders, and ISOs. Easy.

About the only thing ImgBurn can't burn is audio CDs.

Are Roxio and Nero installed on the same system? Problems are bound to happen if they are since they are incompatible. You should uninstall 1 of them to see if it helps if they are running on the same system.

Ok, I'm able to compile and burn a data disc using the "Build mode", and at 2.4x. The disc was verified and appears to be flawless. Thanks Jim, and everyone who gave input!
