My JVC DR-NH20S has been working well since Dec 2004. No "loading" flaws, thankfully.
My problem is with dubbing.
Dubbing from a good video on the HD (eg TV show or wedding material) proceeds fine to a DVD-RAM. I can then edit scenes, etc. Next I dub back to the Hard Drive and dub to a DVD-R and finalize.
The dubbing to a DVD-R (the type usable in this recorder) "appears" to proceed well but after about 1/3 of an up to two-hour DVD-R is played, corruption (those nice pixel-like chops that signify loss of a good digital signal) starts and the rest of the DVD is unreadable (unwatchable).
In other words, many of the DVD-Rs that I have dubbed and finalized using this machine, seem to be corrupted near or beyong the half-way point. The DVD-RAMs that I dub seem fine, but they can only be played on the JVC (and are very expensive as well)
Should I be looking at better blank media; poor "finalization"; or an issue with the JVC?

I'd look at the media for certain.

I have just been to the "MEDIA" forum and they imply that sticky labels, even properly applied and possibly with color printing may be the culprit. Unfortunately the MEDIA posts were several years old.
One such DVD (labelled with an Avery full sticky label and with some colour jet printing) plays fine on my computer but was corrupted midway through on another player.
In addition to "looking at the media" as suggested above, I will try one with no label.

I don't always think of labels first: I haven't applied a label to a DVD in two or three years. I did really study the thread back in the day, and agree that labels are a problem.
If you can read the disc in your computer drive, I'd recommend backing up what you can rescue onto new discs - preferably high quality ones. I use TY inkjet printables.;/ l ,[____], Its a Jeep thing,

I own JVC DR-MH30S since 2005. Never experience any issues.
It could be media. Are those "corruption" occurred in the same DVD brand or different DVD media brands? What brands do you use?
I use only Maxell, TDK, and FUJI. Never failed in my experience with.
