Vista is the same as other Windows OS's in that it doesn't include a MPEG-2 codec which is needed to play DVDs. This is because of copyright reasons. Have you installed a software DVD player that includes the MPEG-2 codec?

Going by what you are saying ...
    only .vob files not playing
If I remember right ... vob files wont play ... unless a program like ... AnyDVD is installed.

if your computer does not even show/recognize a retail DVD

it does appear that you have a VISTA problem

go to the drives mfg, website and see if they have an updated driver for vista

you should be able to do this from the the device manage in the control panel, find the drive and open properties and click on 'update driver'

I know this is going to sound odd but... Vista DOES include one. My jaw nearly hit the floor when I noticed. WMP and Media Center in Vista can both playback DVDs without 3rd party software. I imagine they are paying on of the DVD software guys to use their decoder.

  9. VISTA BUSINESS does not include a DVD player.

Any free codecs out there for Vista DVD playback?

    32-bit or 64-bit version?

EDIT - I just tried a DVD on my 32-bit Vista Ultimate. WMP opened and then did nothing - I had to kill it.

However, opening Windows Media Center (Start/All Programs) and selecting Play DVD worked!

That will teach me to not make assumptions. I have my Vista computer apart for case upgrades, but I will have to try a DVD when I get it set up again. About time, MS.

Hello found this discussion and want to share my findings.
I´m testing Vista Ultimate. Legal version!. I´m testing this version because i want to use it for media center.

When i want to play a dvd (copy ) Vista hangs When i use the original dvd it works.
The copy is working fine under windows XP. If a take a data disc (dvd) no problems. It only gives problems with copy´s.

ps: from all the copy´s i also have the original. I´m not talking about downloaded content.

Folks, I tested self made DVD's (authored with TDA 1.5 and 2.0) and they both played fine in Vista Home premium using WMP 11.
