Alright, I have a brand new LG 18x dl dvd burner (H42NK) ripping at only 2x, using both DVDFab and DVD Decrypter. When I first started using it last week, it was ripping at 16x+, but now it only rips at 2x. I have enabled DMA, reinstalled the IDE controller, and deleted the master/slave files in the registry, but no dice. I can't install the Intel App Accelerator (which cured the prob on my last machine) because it's incompatible with a Dual Core motherboard. I have an Intel DP965LTCK and 2.13ghz DC running on XP Pro if it's any help.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Does it also only burn at 2X? If it works at 8X or 16X for burning, that doesn't sound like a DMA problem. And have you tried one of the DVDs that you ripped at 16X and it also only does 2X now?

You apparently had the problem before with a different computer and the Acceleration App cleared it.

    I can see two possibilities.

One, that your burner has a problem. But this seems unlikely with a new burner. It sounds like riplock, but I don't know why that would activate after a week. I don't like to suggest a firmware upgrade with a new burner, but you might check to see what's available.

Two, that you have some background software that is interfering with the rip. What changes have you made in the computer since last week?

I'm sure there are other possibilities, though remote, like a loose ATA cable or some problem in the ATA controller. Is the burner set to master or slave? Any other devices on the same channel?

That's all that comes to mind for me. Maybe others can come up with some better ideas.

It burns at 16x just fine. Only ripping is a problem. Aside from installing a couple ordinary programs, I haven't installed anything that would cause it to go out of whack. The drive is set to master, with an extra hard drive as a slave. Cables are secured.

Ugh. Just read on newegg that it's firmware locked at a slow rate. Does this mean I should just return the thing and get something better? I can't find a firmware update anywhere.

That sounds like the easy solution. I still use DVD ROMs for reading, so others may be able to give you some suggestions for a burner that either reads faster or is easy to unlock. Or take a look at our DVD Writers Forum: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewforum.php?f=17

LG drives are known to have slow reading speeds. Don't return the drive just because it can't rip faster. Read these threads at the LG FORUM at Cdfreaks.com regarding your LG H42N drive.

    (Crossflash thread)

I'm not sure what is gained by crossflashing the drive with MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT. I still use DVD-ROM's just like redwudz. Although if you want a fast ripper you can get a LITEON 18x or 20x dvd burner to do the ripping for you. Then use your LG H42N to burn dvd media.

Looks like I'll be returning the pos LG. I only have 1 IDE port on my motherboard so getting a secondary dvd burner for ripping isn't really an option right now. Anyhoo, thanks for all the help.
