Just upgraded my Single-core CPU to a Dual core CPU. When I look in the Device manager it shows this...acpi uniprocessor pc--need the multi one...and Windows can't locate the correct driver... Now Windows XP SP 2 only shows 1 cpu in the task manager. All the applications I use to test my pc cpuz and the AMD cpuinfo app only shows one core, not the 2 I have...I have been searching and it appears the only way around it is to reinstall XP. Does anyone have another way to correct the issue....I have also read alot of folks have done something with the HAL and are able to reload it but I can't seem to find all the 3 files that are needed....If anyone can email me the 3 files from their dual core amd setup I would be very greatful..The steps and files are listed below... Thanks for anyone's Help

Note, you only have to do this if the above fails.

Find the following files in as recent a version as you can, check setup cabs for SP2, or on another computer with most recent version and SP2. Then copy them onto a jumpdrive, then rename them as follows:
    . ntkrnlmp.exe rename to ntoskrnl.exe
    . ntkrpamp.exe rename to ntkrnlpa.exe
    . halmacpi.dll rename to hal.dll

No I have not done that yet. That is going to be my last step. I removed my opteron 144 and installed the 4200. The computer runs fine, just only on one core, not both. I am going to try the renaming of the files when I get home tonight. If that doesn't work I will do a repair install first and if that doesn't correct it, then a Fresh reformat of the drive and a new install....Just looking for other ideas first...Thanks

You can go into the command prompt, after putting your XP CD in the drive, and type:
    expand [CD_DRIVE]\i386\Halmacpi.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll

After that, go into Device Manager and rescan for hardware changes. You should be prompted to reboot your computer.

I've done this before going from a Pentium4 to a Dual-Xeon setup at work before without problem. I'd recommend doing it in Safe Mode, I can't remember if you have to do it in Safe Mode or not.

Please keep in mind, that even though I've done it without issue, it doesn't mean you won't run into issues.

Did you do a bios update on your motherboard?
I did not have to re-install Windows when I upgraded from a Amd 3200+ to Duo Core 4200+ couple months ago.
