  1. hello folks my quad core pc is down. i need to know how to convert an mkv to iso then burn it to dvd on a regular pc if possible. on my quad core machine i was able to perform this process flawlessly with AVCHDCoder which would convert the mkv to a .iso and then burn the .iso to dvd with power dvd. now is this possible on a 2.00 ghz processor acer laptop with 3 gigs of ram? and if not what would i need??? or how can i at least convert an mkv file ripped from a blu ray and convert it into an iso that i can burn to a dvd-r disc with the above specs i just mentioned? all help is appreciated. i am a new jack to this arena but steadily taking in knowledge. sorry to bother but i could not find this info any where......

AVStoDVD or DVD Flick (free) or ConvertXtoDVD (not free). Burn with Imgburn. Don't sully your machine needlessly with Nero.

  4. nah nero is trash i stop using that years ago... i guess what i need is something that can give me the same HD quality that i was getting before..... u have to keep in mind that the mkv files i get are usually from actual blu ray disc rips... so the sizes range from 4 to 8 gigs. so i take those mkv's and size em down in AVCHD Coder into a .iso file in the settings tab to fit on a 4.7 DVD-R disc which results in minimal loss of quality when the disc is actually played on my PS3 or stand alone Blu ray player.... and it still looks great and close to blu ray quality.......

Sorry - didn't read your post thoroughly enough. Basically, AVCHDCoder or MultiAVCHD are the main players in the field (at least, in the free arena) and while both will probably run on your laptop, neither is going to do the job quaickly. If you want to process HD on your laptop, you will just have to give it time to do the job. If you only want to play the file on your PS3, you might be able to get away with TSMuxer and putting the file in an M2TS container. This would save you having to re-encode, however this container has a large overhead, so MKV files that barely fit on a disc will surely go over the size limit after re-muxing.

Otherwise you may just have to accept 18 - 24 hour encodes until you get a faster machine.

Nero 10 is much evolved I've been pleased at the changes. I had stopped using it at 6 Ultra. I am a user again.
