I've found that when I rename vobs to mpgs and play them, or import vobs into MPEG Video Wizard DVD or VideoReDo, then export them as MPEG2's the picture always seems to suffer when where is camera panning of reasonable speed; kinda a blurry effect like something can't keep up. I have burned the resultant files to DVD with Convert X to DVD and the glitches aren't the same but picture quality is even worse.
I wanted to go this route so that I could get the best pic quality possible when I burned edited files from DVD movies or DVD recordings, but this isn't working for me right now. Can anyone offer some advice?

VOBs taken from DVDs should not be renamed as .mpg. You don't get an mpeg file, you get a renamed VOB files, including all the other data contained int he VOBs - extra audio, subtitles, nav data etc. Better to demux the content using VOB2MPG first, then load the real mpg file into your editor.
Neither of the programs you have mentioned should re-encode anything other than transitions you might have added, and any partial GOPs. If they are then you are doing something silly like changing framerate, which will result in a total re-encode, lower quality, and jerky behaviour.Read my blog here.

Thanks for the reply.
I know that renaming VOB files isn't good practice. I just did it to compare the picture with that of the same file that had been imported into MPEG Video Wizard DVD / VideoReDo, trimmed and then exported. I'm not that clued up on the different settings e.g. framerate, bitrate etc that are ideal so I have just been going with the default. That said, both the original VOB, renamed as MPG and the exported MPG files both have the same problem. I suppose this goes some way in supporting the fact that the VOB editing software isn't re-encoding anything. On closer inspection the problem occurs when the camera pans quickly or one of the subjects moves fast.
I gave VOB2MPG a go, but the resultant file had exactly the same problem unfortunately. There wasn't a demux option that you mentioned though.Show me a bored kid, I'll show you a lazy kid -
Hi,
first copy the dvd to your hard drive.
Copy the the following notes in notepad and save like MERGE.BAT
Take all the vobs from the dvd, this is only an example.
Run the BAT program in the folder where the vobs are.
You have now 1 VOB called MERGE.VOB
Open this ALL.VOB in VideoRedoo and make a quickstream fix, uou will see the video-audio synchr. is perfect.
Peter,Belgium (sorry for my engl.)
@ECHO off
copy VTS_01_1.vob /B + VTS_02_1.vob /B MERGE.VOB
