I just got a second Pioneer 2950 LD player for some archival work. it's a uk player that handles pal and ntsc discs.. i had thought that it output a pure ntsc signal but capcard isnt really recognising this.. so does anyone know if its outputting pal60?

well after a bit of testing it does seem to be doing a conversion to pal60. Does anyone know which uk players will give a true ntsc signal?

The CLD-2950 has a choice of NTSC outputs. I think it's in the menu although it's a long time since I used one for demonstrations.

NTSC 3.58 is true NTSC. If your capture card won't work with that, it won't work with an American player either.

Right you are. I'm using a Kworld dvd maker pci. All the options are there in device settings for diff tv standards and i thought it was compatible but maybe not. I'll have to check! Thanks

Success! I simply hadnt adjusted the capture framesize/rate settings properly so it had a lot of green space..

Another question in this vein now :

Would i do better to trust the comb filter in the 2950, or get better results with post filtering?

The comb filter in the 2950 was never very good in my opinion. I would only use the s-video output if there was no better option.

I do have the option to keep composite right through. Maybe that'd be best then ..

Not always, it depends on how good a job your capture card does of separating the signal. For example, my AVer card produces very poor results from a composite input so in those circumstances I would use the s-video lead. The only way to tell is to try it both ways and see which is best.
