asf (recorded WMV stream) to AVI

I used ReplayAV to record an online streaming wmv. The saved file is an asf file. I can't open it in VirtualDub.

MPC shows the following:

Audio: Windows Media Audio 32000Hz stereo 32Kbps [Raw Audio 0]
Video: Windows Media Video 9 320x240 25.00fps 308Kbps [Raw Video 1]

1. Is asf a good container?

2. Can I convert it to AVI without recoding?

3. Does DVD player support asf and/or WMV?

Bottom the file you have is a WMV file

AVI is just a container file and can contain many types of video, if you convert it to anything it will have to be renecoded.

As far as standlaones go there might be some out there but the general answer is no. Some DVD players support MPEG and DIVX burned as data files but there really isnt anything else.

Try an earlier version of vdub that had experimental asf support or load it into windows movie maker and output as dv avi .

Essentially, ASF and WMV/WMA are the same thing. WMV/WMA are 'descended' from ASF, though I don't know if there are any major differences between the two - they could've just decided to use the WMV and WMA extensions to differentiate between video and audio streams, as ASFs could be either.

And, people are still using .asf streams today, though that's probably just due to old streaming software or other limitations.

I means those hardware DivX/MPEG4 player. Will they play this asf/wmv file?

A regular DVD/DivX player you could buy at the local store? NO. No way.

These models possibly can, but you'd have to find an online shop that sells them. Notice they all have the same hardware chipset in them - Sigma EM8620L
