Pseudo-progressive capture. Is it fixable? Alternative h/ware options?

Hey all.
I've been scouring these forums for a bit and decided to join in the hope someone can answer my couple of questions with a more definitive answer.

I have the Plextor PX-TV402U.
I have read that the resulting mpg file will be pseudo-progressive i.e. with the blurriness on left to right movement. I understand the difference between this and normal interlace. I also read that this can't be gotten rid of with s/ware filters.
Is this true?
If false then how? I have tried various filters and programs but with no joy (didn't expect much after what I'd read).

Failing that it means new h/ware. Any suggestions?
I am not looking for the best or anything just some options where it doesn't capture/convert this way. I seen plenty of captures out there where the picture looks great with no blurriness.

I am mainly going to be capturing UK based PAL (with occasional NTSC from VHS) and the result will go onto DVD so I am not too fussed about Divx/Xvid, MPG2 will do fine.
I usually adapt my price range to what I need to get the job done, so cheaper and dearer models please (although not pro prices!!

Are you sure the Plextor PX-TV402U won't capture PAL as interlace 720x576i MPeg2? A pitty if true.

Deinterlacing is best left to the DVD player or progressive TV when full resolution is the goal.

Not sure how to get an mpg file on here (2mb isn't enough) but I have included a picture that should illustrate the problem. I gets worse the faster the movement.

From what I have read this device starts with interlace, passes through WIS chip and the output file has the fields blended, given the result in the picture.

I found this reference and located the file it is in:
//deinterlace_mode = 1 // 0: use one field, 1: deinterlace, 2: interlace coding
but changing the options doesn't appear to do anything (at least not to me).

This was posted on these forums in Feb 2005:

Myself and others have had a short diologue with Plextor Dirk over at Divx.com regarding deinterlacing and the ConvertX. The Wis chip in the ConvertX supports progressive and interlaced capture according to specs. However, there is no way ,at present, to disable the default deinterlace capture modes. Dirk has sent a couple users a "work-around" to test. This work-around is from Plextor engineers and an implementation MAYBE incorporated in a new release of Plextor's GoCap utility!
I'm hoping to keep abreast of this issue and really curious to hear results. If it works we may end up with much better captures eventhough they aren't that bad now.

The last Plextor driver updates were Dec 2004. So that hasn't appeared then, and probably won't now. Don't know what the work-around is either or whether the test worked. I use GoCap to capture so it isn't there either.

That is a blend deinterlace.

I had seen it called blend deinterlace but also psuedo-progressive.
So many terms for so many things. LOL

Now the main question. Can I get rid if it, or is it too late??

If not then can the Hauppage or Canopus devices (or whatever) capture proper interlaced mpg2?

I've been looking at these as alternatives to the Plextor if it can't be fixed.

You might have to reboot before the changes take place. Try setting 2. After rebooting capture some video. Then use VirtualDubMod to view the resulting files. You should see interlace comb artifacts. Some media players will deinterlace while they play so you can't trust what you see with them.

But I had already tried that. Its default was option 1. I changed it to 2 and restarted but no difference. For the hell of it I even tried option 0!!!
