  1. I have this PC (not the one in my profile, another one), WnXP SP2 with alllatest updates. When I try playing ANY DVD movie with Windows Media Player, Real Player or Nero Showtime it will make my PC hang, showing audio but no video, forcing me to shut down and reboot. I could solve this by installing VLC player, it will play fine in VLC player, but still, if I try using any of the other media players mentioned (WMP, Nero, etc) the above described problem still occurs. How can I fix this? Thanks.

It sounds like your MPEG-2 codec is corrupted. VLC uses it's own codecs, so that's a good indication of that possibly being your problem. MPEG-2 codecs don't come with Windows, you have to add them. You could delete the codec and install a new one like Stinkys MPEG2 Codec or install a DVD player like PowerDVD and it will install one. Even if you uninstall PowerDVD, the codec will remain.

Codec Sniper is one way to check and remove codecs.

  3. Thanks I'll try that. PowerDVD is already installed, I'll try uninstalling/reinstalling it.
