I need a program that can cut videos and turn them into animations. I just want to cut small parts of a video and make it into a file that I would be able to post in forums for my signature and my avatar. If there is a program that exists please let me know. Your help is cherished.

If you promise not to use the sig here: Last time anyone asked this, Animation Shop was suggested. Worth looking into, if it imports AVI

No I dont use anything on these type of sites. I have animation shop but I have to take still images of the videos and that takes too much time.

    You're asking 2 questions:

    1. Good Editor ("cuts") - plenty here, incl. Vegas, FCP, AVID, PremierePro, Ulead, Edius, for full featured, plus Virtuadub, AVISynth, etc. for freeware (see tools). Should output at high quality(DV or better) to presevere original quality (although you may want an intermediate that is resized down, FRC'd down, and dithered to prepare for the next step).

    2. Converter that accepts high quality movie (AVI, MOV, VOB/MPEG) and converts to Animated GIF.

Ulead makes a good one, Microsoft made a so-so free one, there are others available (do Google search for "GIF Animation editor").

Most of those little avatars are Animated GIF, but some could be Flash? MNG? AVI?
In those cases, you would use a different converter...

Thanks. That helps alot. I already purchased vegas. I dont want sounds to these animations though. Just the videos. Does that change anything? I'll experiment. Thanks for the help!

Ulead Gif Animator and Camtasia Studio are both programs that can turn bits of video into animated gifs fairly effectively.

I've never tried any of these, but they are free to try. Good luck.

Actually I now need a converter that converts a video file (possibly AVI but could be others) to a gif. Right now I'm going to look into Microsofts "so-so free one". If there are any suggestions for a converter please give advice. I am not interested in trials or demos. Please just freeware. Once again your help is cherished.

Haven't tried this, but Google "AVI2GIF" and you'll find a freeware french app. Might do the trick...

For making animated gif`s I use VirtualDub to crop the video , resize and make it the length I need (down to the exact number of frames I need) . Then I use Uleads GIF Animator to make the GIF , but as for Freeware - as I recall SUPER has a preset to make animated GIFs from an input .
