mp4 is a container and no video codec.

No, it's not Jedi training. You are asking the wrong questions.

Baldrick already told you the first answer: MP4 is a container format (like AVI or MKV). It is NOT a codec. So you can't encode anything to MP4. Not to mention VDubMod cannot create a file of MP4 container.

So you see, next time, just ask the question directly, don't assume you can use a certain tool or a certain process. You really should have asked in the beginning, "How do I convert _______ to MP4 files?"

Then we would have asked you... from what? To which MP4 codecs? (Apple's MP4 is usually H264 for video and AAC for audio) and why? If it's for download to iPod, something like SUPER would suffice. If it's for cross-platform compatibility, there are additional considerations.

Also amv is not mp4. It has nothing to do with mp4. So if you asked about mp4 because you have one of those cheap Chinese so called mp4 players. Forget about it, they don't actually support mp4.

how helpfull, clearly if a question is asked with an obvious lack on knowledge in the topic, it would be kind if someone would explain the general concept. (thank you kschang)

Soon as you all need to know every little peice of detail, here it is.

At work we have a shitty small storeroom in which we get 30mins to eat our lunch, I thought it would be nice to bring in some tv show and movies to watch on my psp for everyone. It was my understanding that it plays .mp4.

I use tmpgenc to pull the video off dvd and vdubmod to encode to xvid. I would have liked not to have to re-encode a third time to .mp4?? using those "converters"

We also sell those chinese mp4 players that play .amv video, I wanted to put on a tutorial of how to use it on them.

well thats it.. next time if there is one i will explain myself more clearly..

    thanks anyway.

Yeah, PSP's do support mp4, no custom atoms required anymore either.

As long as your Xvid encode is SP and of a low enough resolution, you could remux to mp4 and it should play. Default Xvid settings have 2 bframes enabled though. If you do have to encode again, you might want to encode to AVC rather than SP MPEG-4.
