    I am using VirtualDub:
I am editing an AVI, I went to filters and then resized the AVI to crop out the black bars. Then I saved it, set to 'full processing mode'. But this file too big now, why can't I save it using 'direct stream copy' ?

  2. You can only use Direct Stream Copy if no reencoding is being done. If filtering (by cropping, in your case), you're forced to use Full Processing, and to reencode. You got a huge file size because you didn't choose a codec and it saved it uncompressed. Save to DivX or XviD, or some such (maybe XviD for a constant quant of 3), and the size will be much smaller.

You want to use the null transform filter then use the Cropping function to crop the black bars, not the resize filter. You can drag the frame in with your mouse or use the number boxes. Use the proper amount of crop so you don't have trouble later..... Divx v6.2 requires width must be a multiple of 4, height must be a multiple of 2, valid depths 24 32. So crop accordingly.

You can't select filter when using Direct Stream Copy mode. If the video is going to be processed (like the crop function) then full processing mode must be used.

By not selecting a codec in Video-Compression then VD will use uncompressed at about 1.25GB pre minute of video. When working AVI files I usually use Huffyuv codec since it is looseless (looses no quality) and will compress the video to about 1/3rd the size of uncompressed (about 400MB per minute).

    Good luck.

Thanks, I used the null transform/cropping function and it worked perfectly.
My question now is, Where is the Video-Compression to selelect the codec in VirtualDub ?, I can't find it.

Once it is installed it should be in the codec list. Have you installed it ?

  9. Do you know the difference between downloading and installing?
    Installation
To install Huffyuv just download the zip file above, uncompress the files to a temporary directory, right-click on the huffyuv.inf file and select "Install." You can delete the files in the temporary directory after the installation completes (which takes only a fraction of a second). There should be no need to reboot.

If you're asked to insert a disk named "Huffyuv AVI lossless video codec," just click OK and select the appropriate directory if necessary.

To uninstall Huffyuv, use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

    Thanks, that worked.

Scorpion King suggested that I save to DivX or XviD, how do I do that??

  11. No, I suggested saving to DivX or XviD. You download and install the codec of your choice. Then you read a guide. Or, better yet, let AutoGK do it for you, since you seem utterly incapable of doing anything on your own.

What format to save the file in depends on what you plan to do with the file next. If this is the final step and you plan on playing the file on computer only then Xvid or Divx are both good choices. If you plan on doing more editing and this save is just a step in the process then Huffyuv is excellent since it is looseless. What are your plans for this file? Determine that then decide which codec to use.

    Good luck.
