Hello. I have 7 episodes of a tv show in .avi format, total 2.3GB. Would it make sense to convert and put these on two seperate 4.7GB DVDs or convert them all onto a 8.7GB DVD DL?

I use VSO XVID->DVD to convert. When I add all the files it totals 7.97 GB on media...is it safe to say that this will fit onto one 8.7GB DVD

As 7.97 GB is less than 8.5GB, you can expect it to fit on a dual layer disc. Give the compatibility problems with DL playback on older machines, you will probably get more reliable results going to 2 4.38GB discs. But the choice is up to you.

If you go down the DL path, make sure you use imgburn2 to set the layer break correctly and to burn the results.

My only experience with DVD burning is copying DVDs, and converying XVIDs to DVDs and buring them...both with CloneDVD2. Forgive my "newbness", what do you mean layer break? Why wouldnt CloneDVD2 work?

EDIT: also I hear that size does not matter with DVDs and it is the total time that matters. My total time is over the 240min listed for the 8.5GB DL.

Running Time x Bitrate = Space. It is possible to put more than 14 hours on a DL layer disc by encoding at VCD resolution and low bitrates. Use a bitrate calculator, and the total running time for all your videos combined.

The layer break is the point that the laser reverse direction and alters it's read depth. It is the approx. the halfway point int he data burnt to the disc. If this isn't set properly then the disc may fail, or may stop at the break point.
