Running Windows 98SE with Internet Explorer 6 when trying to go to Yahoo mail, Hotmail or any web based email it gives error message, "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconveniencd." It then gives option to send error report and restarts Internet Explorer, but there's no problem accessing other web sites. I tried repair Internet Explorer option in Add/Remove Programs, but problem persists. Has anybody else had this problem or know a fix?

These sites rely heavily on AJAX and XML - maybe your (now) old OS doesn't have support for that?

No such problem exists with Mozilla or Netscape which indicates problem resides with IE6.

What version of Java do you have installed? Also, are you sure you don't have any BHOs or spyware installed that might be causing problems?

Java version 5.0 which is latest according to Java site. I'm running Avast anti-virus as well as Ewido anti-malware and have no malware I'm of which I'm aware.

Do you have any BHOs (not necessarily malware) that you think might cause problems? Or running processes?

What happens if you clear your cache and cookies (back up your cookies first if you prefer), then try the sites again?

Yeah, I had a feeling I should've written it out instead of using the acronym. It's why I shouldn't make forum posts in the middle of the night.

Grab hijackthis ... bho's will show straight up in the list ... with this tool you can remove them ... however should you revisit a site that requires these they get recalled , and there back once more .

You can also disable stupid programs that run from the startup ... like stupid quicktime , printer utility , and others ... it makes the pc load faster so you can get going .

If you see anything strange in the list , go to the hijackthis forum and do a quick search for the item and see if anything turns up ... it may be nothing ... then again ... it could be a problem .

If it dosent show there ... then do a google search should nail it down .

Drsmartdownloader , kyb??? , kyb??? , kyb??? ... if there is more than four of those , you are infected with right pains .

Mozilla browser would be a better choice on aging os ... atleast if ie keeps packing it in , you have a backup ... and one that has a download manager thrown in for free .

Odd that a problem with msvcrt.dll would only show up on those sites, though. (But I'll have to admit I know almost nothing about the DLL, anyway. )

Glad to hear you solved the problem.
