  1. Hi,
    Using Quicktime 7.1.3, ffmpegX v0.0.9w r5, OS X 10.4.8.
When I convert an avi to DVD using DVD ffmpeg, it works just fine, but does not preserve the letterbox format of the original file.
When I choose "Decode with QT (letterbox)" on the Options tab, it preserves the letterbox format, but the video pauses every second or so.

I've searched the forum, and tried several options, but nothing works.
Can any one suggest something that will work?

    TIA,
    Charles

Try DivX Doctor on the AVI. Check the settings that would produce a separate QT movie. Drop that movie onto ffmpegX.

    Let us know what happens.

    What Quicktime components are installed?

I'm asking because the 3ivx 4.5.1 decoder under QT7 has a tendency to give jerky playback. (If you've got it installed, there's a 4.5.2 version that is distributed with 3ivx Crush that fixed it for me. Do a "show package contents" and look around and you should find it.)

Another possibility is to run it through MPEG Streamclip and export as QuickTime (MJPEG-B) as best quality. Then drop the resulting file (it will be large) onto ffmpegX.

  5. Jacke - When I opened DivX Doctor II it told me I don't have 3ivx MPEG-4 installed, and that I should get a copy. I downloaded the demo of 3ivx Crush, installed it, and DivX Doctor *still* tells me I don't have 3ivx MPEG-4 installed.
    Waz-up-wid-dat?

rumplestiltskin - The movie that was created when I dropped my .avi onto DivX Doctor II has all white video. I used the default settings, which indicated that I should get a stand-alone movie and it should auto-run.
    Ahem...Waz-up-wid-dat?

    Okay, let's try something else...

Install the Perian decoder; it encompasses most of the necessary codecs. Remove the others from the QuickTime folder first before you install Perian. Restart. Try it then.

  7. I have had success!!!
Haven't burned the DVD yet, but I used Toast to save the .avi as a DVD-DL image, and that worked. I will burn to single-layer DVD with compression.
I used "Best Quality" and Half-PEL.

Thanks for the help, can you recommend other settings for custom encoding in Toast or point me to a tutorial?
