Jerky video playback

Hi there,

for a while now whenever I transfer my video from the camcorder (which playsback fine without jerking) to the computer (using windows movie maker capture and even PowerDirector), when it has been captured, and in the case of windows movie maker immediately converted to wmv, when I play it back every second there is a slightly pause of half a second or so, which although small is noticible and can get very annoying. For a long time I have tried to get around it by changing the speed of the footage, which then led to problems with the sound etc., but I recently discovered https://forum.videohelp.com/topic329845.html, and although I'm using windows maybe the problem is the same, something to do with framerate conversion?

I would really appreciate any help someone could give me to resolve this issue

EDIT: In case its useful I'm in the UK and the digital camera was bought in the UK also. I have tried to find the fps of the video camera but I cant find it annoyingly (sony DCR-HC35 handycam)

Also the odd thing is, even though there are these extra freeze frames being put in the audio stays in sync

But are you doing any framerate conversion? BE sure to keep it same as the source. It's probaby 25fps so set the output to 25fps.

If not then we neeeeed MORE information about your camcorder and what FORMAT it captures in.

Sorry about the slow reply, the video camera I'm using is a Sony Handycam DCR-HC35, and I'm recording in SP mode, MiniDV. Does that help?

Even when I set the capture profile to MPEG-2 DVD SP ("This profile records video content into a SP DVD file with NTSC format using a fast encoding technique."), it still is jerky. I'm able to set a custom profile, but it asks for Mode (CBR/CVBR) and Average and Max bitrates

You want to use a PAL (720x576, 25 fps) template, not NTSC (720x480, 29.97 fps).

Have you tried your camcorder file on another computer with the same results?

I had a similar situation, but found out it was a problem with the computer itself. Another program (or process, I forget which) was causing a conflict during playback, much like you describe.

It depends on the particular camera's market ... if it isn't capturing in 25fps then it was not meant to be sold within the uk market

If it is capturing 25fps then why the conversion at all ?

Maybe ... when you say capturing you meant "importing" from camera via firewire using supplied or other application ... if this be the case, then change the applications import / capture rate to 25fps ... this will prevent the "jerkiness" which has been noticed

You may also wish to test a sample on another system but I think what I have mentioned here might actually help you to resolve the problem.

However if the camera is indeed capturing in nstc format then it is upto the software application to correct this during the conversion stage, not the import / capture stage ... I recommend ulead videostudio 8 or above which works better than others at perfoming this function ... cheap in ebay
