Does anyone else find it annoying when watching a movie on a wide screen tv, on the standard 'auto wide' setting that sometimes the subtitles are visible on the picture, sometimes visible just below the picture, and sometimes cut off below the visible area and you have to alter the aspect ratio to see them ? Why haven't they come out with some standard size and positioning of the subtitles to agree with the current tv's ?

The problem is from 'amateurs' that have no clue on how to properly place subs for viewing on the average TV. Unfortunately, there's not really a simple 'cure' for them.

For the rest of us, you will just have to adjust the positions or letterbox the videos so that the subs will show properly.

There are really no standards, but common sense dictates that most viewers use a TV to view a subtitled video and the 'encoders' should place the subtitles properly for that.

From your description, you are referring to DVD movies. There are bascially two types, hardcoded and soft. Hardcoded subs are part of the actual video and placement is determined by the person/studio creating the video. Soft subs (which I believe you are having issues with), are just text files that are played by the DVD player along with the movie. Placement and font are determined by the DVD player. Placement is usually x number of pixels from the bottom of the image. If you aren't using the "standard" view on your TV, then your TV is cropping off part of the image.
