Hi,
This is my 1st post. This Forum appears to be a great resource and I hope this question doesn't seem too stupid.
I'm trying to condense/defrag (for lack of a better term) a DVD-R disk. I recorded 3 shows on a consumer DVR. I would like to omit the second show and just keep the 1st and 3rd shows. So I deleted the second show. But instead of having the 3rd show move into the space created by the 2nd show's deletion, I just have a one hour hole that I can't use. Not efficient at all.
So I put the disk in my PC to view the files. I figured I could delete show no. 2 from the folder and burn a new DVD with just the 2 shows I wanted in a row. The folder listed 3 VOB files. I deleted VOB_01_2 and burned a new disk without that show. Results? Not only did the menu NOT show me 2 shows, it wouldn't play anything!
I'm assuming that VOB_01_2 was still tethered to VOB_01_1 and that's why it wouldn't play. Is that correct? If it is, then what good are the segments? VOB_01_2 was recorded on a different day and in no way is connected to VOB_01_1. Same situation with VOB_01_3. So why couldn't I delete VOB_01_2 and have the other 2 progams still play on a new disk?

Welcome to VideoHelp!
Your mistake is you believe there's a correspondace between files on a Video DVD, and the titles. There isn't. A title may be scattered thruout several VOBs, or just in one or...
The IFO is what tells the player where to find what. IIRC, it's based on sectors and stuff, so if you as much as move a VOB on the disc, it won't play.
You should have reauthored the DVD with something like VOBBlanker or DVDRebuilder.

Strange .. they normally would have been associated because of their id's being in order .
If they were recorded in the same manner , then grab vobedit .
Open first clip in vobedit , hit demux , chose mpeg , click ok and place it in a new folder ... call it one ... and wait .
Go back to vobedits main window , and the information regarding audio type and stream will be listed .
Repeat the demux , but now choose the audio format , and stream id that was listed ... and repeat as for video .
Place both in same folder .
Repeat for second vob , and place both streams in a new folder , call it two .
From here you can use them in any dvd authoring product ... the audio may need conversion ... besweet ... to ac3 or whatever your chosen authoring package requires ... dvdauthorgui accepts ac3 .
Then burn to dvd .
