    Ripping is unlikely to be the problem. The most likely causes of inconsistent playback between players is one or more of ;

    a) TV Format (NTSC vs PAL). Some players are multi-format, some are not. In the US, most NTSC players are resolutely NTSC only, although this is starting to change. Most PAL players will play NTSC without issue.

    b) Media. Not all players like all media. Some players just refuse to play certain media, or play it very badly.

    c) Disc format. While most new players are +/- agnostic, some older players are locked into a single format.

So to begin solving the problem the you need to give us

    1. The media brand and code of the discs you burn to
    2. The TV format of the DVDs that won't play (if it is all discs then this is not likely to be the current problem)
    3. Brand and model numbers of the players

You should also read the manuals (I know, no-one likes to do this, but sometimes it is necessary) to see if they mention restrictions on disc format or TV format.

It might be as simple as buying better discs.

Also, more information on the programs and processes you currently use to rip, create and burn your discs.

If you don't mind spending a few bucks for the easiest to understand 1-click wonder you may want to look at DVD-Fab Platinum, you just pop the disk in you want to backup and pop the blank in when it calls for it and you're done. It decrypts, shrinks, burns...its all you need..and updates for life.

For media the best way to go is Supermediastore and buy the Taiyo Yudens they sell, probably the best dvd blank in the world for about 35 cents each or so. Guaranteed authentic..

The best media readily available in the stores is Sony (made in Japan). I have a lot of these, and have good luck with them. You may also want to try RipIt4Me for ripping. This is what I use, unless I have a problem, and then I use DVDFab Decrypter.

If you write to +Rs, you should set your writer to bitset if your writer can do this.

  5. Media is probably the most likely problem.

What formats do your players like DVD-R or DVD+R or both?

DVD-R is said to be more compatible.

Some players are very picky as to which media they will accept.Verbatim media that uses MCC dye and AZO are known to be good when it comes to picky players due to the good reflectivity of these discs.

I dont know if you can buy them in the US but Verbatim (Taiyo Yuden) DVD+ or -R's are fantastic quality.TYG02 for -R and YUDEN000T02 for +R.

Ripping has nothing to do with the playback/compatibility on a DVD Player.

  10. You can never judge how good the quality of DVD media is by the brand.Even brands like Sony or Fujifilm can be bad.It all depends on the factory the brand name paid to make their disc's and the dye used.Sony have used the Japanese factory (Taiyo Yuden) to make their disc's and they are top quality, yet another time they might use the Taiwan factory which isn't so good.I cant comment on the quality of the Imation discs you are using because I need to know the Media ID which can be found using DVD Identifier. The MID is what counts at the end of the day!

Look here to get a better understanding of what I am trying to say.

Like I said Verbatim media that uses Mitsubishi Chemicals dye with Advanced AZO will be very good with a picky player that refuses to play most media.

For DVD-R's,look for Verbatim media with a Media ID of MCC02RG20 or MCC03RG20 or a brand that uses the Japan factory with a Media ID of TYG02 or TYG03 (You could also buy the unbranded Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's that usually come in spindles of 100).

For DVD+R's,look for Verbatim media with a Media ID of MCC003 or MCC004 or a brand name that uses the Japan factory with a Media ID of YUDEN000T02 or YUDEN000T03 (Again, you could also buy the unbranded Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's that usually come in spindles of 100)

You wont find any DVD media that comes any better than these regarding compatibility/playability,problem free and long lifespan!

Btw I'd recommend TMPGEnc DVD Author rather than Nero for DVD Authoring.I trust that TDA produces compliant DVD Video Files that should play without a hitch.Make sure that the video's your downloading are to DVD specs.GOP size errors/broken MPG's might need repairing/fixing using "Quickstream fix" with a tool like VideoReDo to make sure that you dont have problems playing back the video.

  12. Well,TDK is good,1st class media according to the DigitalFAQ site.It can also depend on your DVD Writer and firmware.Your writer may prefer other media even though you have media with a good quality MID.The firmware for your writer could be updated in case they have improved the write strategy for TDK media.

At least the TDK's are actually being read by your player.

Which audio format did you use when the DVD was authored,LPCM,AC3 or MPEG-1 Audio Layer II?

I know that most players in America support LPCM and AC3 but not MPEG-1 Audio Layer II.

  15. It really does sound like a media problem to me,freezing is a sign of this from my experience of media that my writer disliked ect... I have actually used 1st class media, the MAXELL MID 1 year ago and when I try to play back the discs now,it keeps freezing, but not everytime. They are kind of tempormental.

My Verbatims from a year ago,no probs playing still.

TDK is good but if you buy any more then I'd suggest you get the media I've mentioned in my previous posts. It dont look like running the AVI's through digitalvideo repair is going to make a difference.

Have you checked your DVD Writers website to see if they have improved the write strategy for DVD media?
