  1. this happens quite often to me, i will download a video and it will not open in any media player and has no information summary with encoding specs. however, the videos often play on a divx supported dvd player when burned onto a data disc, and some do not. for those that do not, does anybody have any suggestions to make these videos function.
also, they are of full size (ie. a television series with all videos of relative equal size 350mb), so i doubt they are a lost cause.

You could start by using g-spot or avicodec to tell you what type of video they actually are. From there you can download and install the correct codec for playback.

Alternatively, use VLC for playback, as it uses it's own codecs and doesn't require that you have them installed in most cases.

Finally, FFDShow will allow you to play back most formats through most players.

As for playback in a standalone player - each player has it's own restrictions on what is acceptable. You need to understand what restrictiosn apply to your player.

Mpeg4modifier can alter certain aspects of a video without re-encoding. In other cases you have to completely re-encode, otherwise avirecomp can be used to re-encode to suit most players.
