Dear Friends,
Is there a way to convert/adjust a commercial DVD (Sand Pebbles) from wide-screen to full-screen? The wide-screen seems to cut off too much of the top and/or bottom of the picture for my taste but I don't know whether there *is* anything more at the top or bottom. Is there?
Regards,
Jack Owens

No, what you see is what is there unless VistaVision and you have access to the original prints.

PS: Looks like "Sand Pebbles" was only released as 2:35 to 1 on DVD. Original film was shot as Panavision. -
only option since they never released a full screen version is live with the letterboxing which is what I would do.
Or if you player has a zoom buttton use that keeping in mind that you will lose action on both sides of the screen or if your TV has a zoom/fill button. I have a zoom function on a DVD player and my TV. The only time I zoom something is if it is a SD letterboxed video and is not filling the screen side to side. Then I zoom until it fills the screen side to side. The black bars above and below do not bother me. I'd rather see the whole thing rather than cutting off the sides. -
The Sand Pebbles was shot in Panavision anamorphic with 70 mm prints in 2.20:1 and 2.35:1. It is the 2.35:1 print that is used for DVD transfer for this particular film. There is nothing top and bottom that you are missing. Converting this to full screen would in fact throw away nearly half the image.
