I seem to recall that there's some advanced setting you can change before burning on Windows to make DVD+R's much more compatible with DVD players. Is there a way to do that on a Mac?

If your burner has a modified firmware that allows bitsetting ..... (you can change the booktype from DVD+R to DVD-ROM). This makes the DVD+R more compatible with older players. Newer DVD players should be able to play +R or -R equally as well.

So do I just need a firmware modification, or do I also need software that will allow me to do it (and is there any available for Mac)? And where would I find this? My burner model is DRW-3S163, btw.

All you need is a mod firmware. It looks like you would have to crossflash the burner to a LiteOn. Check out this forum:

To get it to work on a Mac try here:

Maybe you you should upgrade your burner ... They are pretty cheap. NEC's have Mac support and have plenty of mod firmware.
