  1. Hi, I have a Dell Latitude C840 Notebook Computer.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it's "thick." It's not as thin as some of the newer models.

Does anyone know if it's possible to take in inside parts of my C840 and put them into a different casing, one that's smaller and more thin and compact?

    Thanks!!!!

Anything's possible, but I think this would take some skill - not like going out and buy a new empty case (are there any for sale at all? - Never seen...), and simply move the innards from one case to the other.
    So: No.

  4. Or to put it another way for several reasons including

    1. The insides are propriatary and often will not even fit into the case from the same brands different model.

    2. The reason the thin ones are thin is they are even more miniturized than yours. If you took your apart you would find that the case is very thin and the electronics are what makes up the thickness. The really thin ones sometimes use a different even smaller hard drive and super thin optical drive. Different more expensive screen and other parts.

Take your battery out and look at how thick it is.

If you want thin and light sell yours and use the money towards a nice $3000 plus Sony for example.

No, but there is a line of diy notebooks, by Asus I think, that allows you to use your own CPU/RAM/HD/maybe a bit more. Since I don't know the lappy market near as well, I can't say if ANY of your current components will be comatible with such a project, but it's an idea.

[edit] Yep, my memory isn't all that bad ..
    Asus one reviewed here @ [H]ardOCP http://consumer.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTE2NSwxLCxoY29uc3VtZXI=
..Just google 'diy notebook computer' and you'll come up with some more sources - retailer(s), manufacturer of other chassis setups, other reviews..

I dunno about the rest of you guys, but i use my laptop mainly like a compact Desktop Pc. I NEVER move it around with me.

It would be neat if they did sell larger custom laptop cases, so that way i could move my laptop into a nicer looking case, and also have room to put things like a few full-size DVD drives.

You could screw all the parts to a piece of pegboard and make it thinner.

Eh forget it. While its a cool idea, compactness has its price: Screensize! From what i'm seeing on wikipedia, the largest was 7.1". No way.

My laptop screen is 14" which is Nice, but no way would i want to go any smaller(sometimes i kick myself for not shelling out a little more for the 15" screen).

I'd imagine the itsy-bitsy keyboard would be a pain in the ass overtime as well. Plus NO ROOM for a disc drive!

I had one (a Libretto) and when you have to carry as much stuff as I used to -- it was a great way to travel and stay a bit lighter ....

screen size and keyboard were just fine for what i needed it for ...

You say you never move it around.
So why not get Slimline DESKTOP computer and a regular LCD screen.

Laptop are for people that need mobility but are willing to give up
the configurability that a desktop can handle.
