'm posting my problem here, in the hopes that someone may have had a
similar experience, and can help me.

I'm using a GATEWAY laptop, with Windows XP service pack 2 installed. Some
time ago, i lost most of the sound on my laptop. I dont recall when it was
exactly, so i cant just uninstall recent programs. The odd thing is this....
mp3 files play fine, movies and video files play fine, but i dont get audio on
any system sounds, or audio from websites.

When i go to SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES, nothing is muted, but when i go to
the SOUNDS area, and choose a system sound, the PLAY button is grayed out,
    so it cant be used.

Also the sound volume icon will NOT show in the taskbar, even though its
checked in the SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES area.

If anyone has any tips, please let me know.

    thanks,

    Win

p.s. please dont tell me to get a MAC, ok?

This could be ANYTHING. If u don't want to pay anybody to figure this thing for u, pull out the recovery disc and re-install from scratch. Be sure to back up data.

  3. On the SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES area, click the AUDIO tab and check your default device. I had a similar problem where the system would not give sounds, but a DVD program would. It turned out that my default sound card was disabled and I had to go to Device Manager to enable it again.

  5. K-lite codec pack installed around the time of failure? XVID codec?

Uninstalling and then re-installing audio devices is a generic fix for this problem, however there is a registry tweak for the issue if caused specifically by the K-lite installation.

  10. Not the drivers, the device itself. Delete it, remove all files, reboot, then re-install.

There is apparently a problem with many PCs that after installing the K-lite pack it removes some registry settings that cause this problem. It is common enough that they added a utility to restore the settings. There was a guy posted here about it.

  12. Run the Codec Tweak Tool. It has an option to fix system sound by restoring some registry keys.

Start > Programs > K-Lite Codec Pack > Configuration > Codec Twaek Tool

YOU DON'T HAVE A DRIVER FOR YOUR AUDIO!

Right click on "My computer" on your desktop and choose "Properities" -> click on tab "Hardware" -> "Device Manager" and see if you have any yellow question marks. If I am correct you should have one under "other Devices" showing exacly what kind of driver you should have for your audio.
You can download free AC97 Audio driver which is universal driver for most systems. You may need to get a specyfic driver.

LNDTF, i guess i dont have the Klite codecs installed as i dont have a Klite programs group. Thanks for the tip, though.

flytRAP, i have no yellow question marks in my device manager area.
Under SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS, i have the following:
    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
    SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
    Video Codecs

    thanks,
