DV Capturing problems

Hi all,

This seems a complicated problem, I'm finding it hard to troubleshoot.

I usually capture DV to WMV using Windows Media Encoder. I hook a Sony DSR-25 DCVAM player in my firewire port, select the Sony DV Device in Windows Media Encoder and start Encoding.

I could do this fine until I tried to capture uncompressed DV with Sony Vegas this morning. I received the following error: ''The Device Cirrus Logic USB-DVR2 Source' could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another user. So I aborted the plan and captured DV with VirtualDubMod instead.

When I got back to Windows Media Encoder, a 'Cirrus Logic USB-DVR2' option was added on my video devices. On selecting Sony DV Device like usual, my input was big blocks of video like a puzzle.

I tried the following solutions without any success.

1. Restarting computer
2. Unplugging / replugging firewire
3. system restore
4. deleting the registry key for Cirrus Logic (suggested as a solution in an other forum)

Obviously I am not certain that the 'Cirrus Logic USB-DVR2' is the cause of my problem, just a feeling.

Vegas still cannot capture and the Only available video device after deleting the Cirrus Key is the 'Microsoft DV camera and VCR'. Te result on selecting this device is again, Big video blocks.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated as it is vital for me to fix.

You may want to try to capfer the DV first, as a separate step, using a simple program such as WinDV.

Then import that into whatever editing/rendering applications you want to use.

thanks for your speedy reply. Capturing DV first and encoding in WMV later won't solve my problem as I could do this fine until today.

The reason I need to capture in WMV is because its a specification in the company I work.

Usually the tapes I receive are 2 hours each so two steps would double my work.

Is this happening with all tapes ? I have seen similar a few times, and it is usually a sign of problems with the tape, or with the heads of the camera.

I guess my suggestion was more of a workaround as opposed to fixing the problem which as you point out would still be there, apparently something has broken as a result of trying Vegas.

Unless it is as guns1nger is suspecting, that nothing is broken in the software and the tape and/or camcorder is having problems. Just trying a straight capture would help narrow that down.

For me it looks like a NTSC/PAL problem. I get such pictures, whenever I try to capture with my ADVC 300 in the wrong mode (ie.e NTSC mode from PAL input or vice versa).

This is a device driver issue caused most likely by the failure to recognise your deck by your PC. I've seen it myself in Vegas only when my firewire capture piece was unplugged or powered down. Check your firewire devices and make sure your deck is seen by your PC. The picture is likely a result of a driver mess. Check the solutions linked above (even though I disagree with conclusions drawn by some posters...).

It was actually a driver mess. I uninstalled re re-installed Windows Media Encoder and also updated video and device drivers. Not sure which one of these was the solution as I did all of them together and made the checks at the very end.
