So for all of your video needs do you prefer one-click programs with little or no customization or do you like having super control over everything?
I myself am kind of in the middle. I like Tmpgenc Dvd author - it has a lot of customization but it is very stragiht forward and can be made very basic for quick and dirty dvds. But I can use it to make some fancier dvds if I want.
How about you?

99% of the time I use dvdlab pro because i love the ability to customize your dvd. The other 1% i use Ulead DVD moviefactory for quick, plain dvds.

I like control of all aspects of the project's creation but ease of use also. It seems like the more "control" you have the harder the programs are to use. In the end, I end up somewhere in the middle.

I use both. Sometimes ConvertXToDVD if I want quick and easy and the source is not that great. If I have a good source video, then I use a standalone encoder and authoring program for conversion to DVD. Most of the time it's TMPEGEnc Plus encoder and TMPGEnc DVD Author.
I have used the freeware alternatives and find they give similar quality. But they do take a little more study to learn to get the best results. There is a lot of excellent freeware available. I use VirtualDub Mod, HC encoder, Audacity, ffmpeggui, Aften, AVISynth, DivxToDVD, DVD Shrink, DVD Fab Decrypter, RipIt4Me, Daemon Tools, SUPER, ImgBurn and others. All great freeware programs. -
A combination of the above - some steps I use oneclickers others I use full featured software

Yup...I'm "A combination of the above" kinda' guy...

Yep me too. It all depends on the source files. I still use dvd2svcd for avi to dvd conversion. But I also use DVDlab pro for optimal control.
-
Combination of above.
I tend to favor freeware which, as mentioned, often requires a little extra effort, but some of it is very simple for certain tasks."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Buy My Books -
I'd say it depends on what I want to do - Just to watch a capture on TV, I use TDA, as it's the quickest way I know, no menu, just cut out commercials and author away.
If I want something "for keeps", I can go to any length (time permitting) to get it exactly as I want it.

Depends on the source
Depends on the need
Depends on my mood
Depends on which machine I'm using
Depends on what other tasks I'm occupied in at the same time.
Not really consistant -
One click for watch and delete material, advanced tools for everything else.
-
it really depends on exactly what it is that I'm doing/what the end product needs to be.

"I've been everywhere man"
But keep coming back to The FilmMachine v1.5.0.18beta for audio and AVS script, TMPGEnc Plus or CCE SP2 when no filters required, mux TMPGEnc Plus and author I prefer Tsunami MPEG DVD Author Pro over TMPGEnc.
