Multi-track audio software targets multiple sub-markets and personal tastes. "Best" depends on what you are doing and what is used by your working peers. Digi-Design has great penetration in the recording industry but can be expensive and difficult to support for an individual. If you are training to work in the industry, Digi-Design might look good on the resume.

You might want to find a multi-track audio forum that best matches your experience.

Personally, I prefer a hardware mixer

I've been using Reaper since it first came out for simple multitrack stuff and it's brilliant.

  6. Presonus' Studio One is a new kid on the block. I recently got it bundled with a Presonus FireStudio. Both blew me away. Got the whole lot for $360. I expected the bundled DAW to be nothing more than a CD coaster but it really is wonderful. I've been researching for newly two months. Having used Sonar for a while, tested Ableton and others, I think Studio One is remarkable. It runs smoothly on an old P4 laptop and lets me add reverb, compression and multiband parametric EQ at the same time without any glitches even when recording. At last, I can monitor my live signals with effects without latency issues. Excellent drum sounds, guitar amp effects, automation blah-blah. Oh, it has a native 64-bit version and comes in Mac and PC flavors. I might need to get me a 64-bit laptop...

The lighter version is $199 vs. $299 for the full one.

Reaper all the way. Lightweight, non-intrusive install, rock solid performance, and extremely powerful features. Make sure you download the excellent manual also. Reaper is 30-day un-restricted trialware.

Having used Digidesign ProTools for near 20 years now (yeah, I used it when it was v1.0!), I would put it at the top of any list having to do with Professional workflow, Capabilities, Performance. Since you used the word "ADVANCED" in the title, that would be my recommendation.

But it ain't cheap! And, with the exception of the older, buggy Free version, it's TIED to proprietary hardware, so you've got to pay for both hardware & software. BUT, on a system that is recommended by them (and maintained lean & clean), it won't let you down.

How many tracks, FX, controls, I/O, highrez, etc do you really need? Maybe what you want isn't "advanced", just MOR/Prosumer...
