This is my first post here. I have a video clip in an ogm format which I wanted to burn to a DVD to play in my standard DVD player. I use Nero Vision packaged with Nero 7 Ultra Edition to burn videos, but when I tried to burn the ogm file as is, I got a "unable to insert video" error. So, I assumed this was because Nero didn't recognize the format, so I thought "Why not convert the file to avi?" as I had lots of sucess with burning avi videos.

Enter OGMtoAVI. I put a check mark by "preserve subtitles", & "show directories" - wasn't sure if these were crucial or not, though. Also selected the MP3 conversion bitrate to 128 kbps. The program coverted the file wonderfully, as there were no errors. However, when I play the file in Windows Media Player, the video is all green and the motion of the video is distorted. Looks like a weird hallucination, but whatever. The audio performs well, though. Same thing in RealOne Player.

Anyway, I used Gspot to check and see if there was a problem with rendering, but it didn't find any. Then I tried other media players - VLC, Divx Player, those played the video fine, with no visual distortion. I'm assuming this is a codec issue that some players have unless that specific codec installed.

Anyway, my question is do I need to fix the avi before burning it to a DVD, or will it play fine as is?

What type of DVD are you planning to create? Is it for a Divx player? Or a regular DVD player?

Most OGM is Xvid or similar already, just with Ogg audio and maybe subtitles and some extra audio tracks.

I normally use VirtualDub Mod for those type of conversions. This guide is one way to do it for a regular DVD: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=222005

If you just need AVI, then it's easier. Just convert the audio to MP3 and rename the file XXX.avi instead of XXX.ogm. You may need the Xvid codec installed for VDM to read the file. I'm sure there are better ways, but this has worked for me.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for replying. I meant that I wanted to burn the video to DVD to play in my standard DVD player. I actually just went ahead and burned the converted avi clip as is. Lo and behold, it works fine. It pauses briefly in a few places, but then resolves itself when I rewind a few seconds back and play again. I did use cheap DVD+R discs, so that may why, but it's no big deal.

I suppose the issue with the video being distorted in some software and not others has to do with them not knowing the codec I guess.
