  1. Win XP Sp3, and WMP 9.00.4507

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/zjv04g

This file doesn't play the video part but does play in VLC.

Is it a codec issue? It says error downloading codec in the status bar.

    I tried changing the codec
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/cgnurr

but still plays video portion fine in VLC but fails video portion in WMP 9.00.4507 in Win XP sp3

i'd like to convert the file so it works in that WMP.

I am not going to down load the video in question, but in general you should start by opening the file in mediainfo to find out what audio and video codecs have been used to compress the file, then install the appropriate codecs so WMP can play it. FFDShow will allow WMP to play most formats without too much messing around, so I would start there before re-encoding the file.

It's h264 with mp3. Installing FFdshow indeed will do.

  4. will do but why didn't my conversion work, this is the second file(acdoesnt2.avi), not the H264 one(acdoesnt.avi). acdoesnt2 is converted to mp3 and mpeg2 but has the same issue, why would that be? that one is not H264.

mpeg2 in an AVI container is unusual and not usually supported. Add to that the fact that XP doesn't have native mpeg-2 support and you have your answer. Your file is an abomination.

Mpeg-1 will play without help in XP, as will WMV format files (can be dependent on which version of WMP you are using. Otherwise you need to install codecs.

  6. actest1.avi plays with jumbled video in WMP
I used this line to convert it (it was mpeg2 )
    c:\>ffmpeg -i acdoesnt.avi -acodec libmp3lame -vcodec mpeg1video actest1.avi

actest1.wmv doesn't play in WMP. (i've put the mediainfo output for that file in italics,). WMP says it's either damaged or corrupt.

Either install FFDShow, or start out with a decent ffmpeg front-end until you find a combination that works. Frankly, I rate WMP as one of the worst players out there. I prefer Media Player Classic Home Cinema or VLC instead. Not just for the codec support, but also subtitles and multiple audio tracks.

I'd like others with win xp sp3 to be able to view the video in WMP. So i'm looking to convert the video so it plays in WMP on xp sp3.

also i'd like to test ffdshow just to see if it makes that WMP play it but i'd like it to be reversible, is that possible? how would I undo? 'cos it's beneficial for me to have this WMP that doesn't play incase others wanting to view the file have the issue, I want to be able to convert the file so it plays for them, without them having to download ffdshow.

    mp3 audio is also uncommon for mpeg1video. Use mp2. For mpeg2video. mp2 or ac3.

Why not convert to mpg container.

    c:\>ffmpeg -i acdoesnt.avi -acodec mp2 -vcodec mpeg1video actest1.mpg

thanks that conversion worked it plays. Is there a list of container types and the common codecs associated with them?
So, for .avi and for .mp4 .wmv for example. I notice mpg is a bit big too..

and will ffdshow allow me to view the codecs WMP has installed, and thus add/remove the use of a codec, so as to have more control and see what's causing things to work / not work(useful for the future)?

With your requirements to play by others actually only mpeg1video/mp2 in mpg and wmv1/wmav1 in wmv container.

You can at anytime enable/disable its supported codecs at list on its configuration windows (for audio and video).

i'm hoping to find some kind of list.. and for example..

so, fine MPG container MPEG1 video codec MP2 audio codec

but for MPEG2 video, which XP doesn't natively support..(though I Have a win xp sp2 system that plays it, so maybe that one got some additional codec somewhere down the line for MPEG2 support)..

But, for MPG container and MPEG2 video, which Audio do I use- MP2 or MP3?

For MP4 container, which video and audio codec ?

    and What Audio with WMV?
    thanks

To find out which codecs are installed you could try DirectShow Filter Manager.
There are others too. FFdshow doesn't have a option to show these.

    I don't know of a list. mpeg2video supports mp2 and ac3.

For MP4 container, which video and audio codec ?
    mpeg4, x264 with aac audio.

    and What Audio with WMV?
wmav1 audio. Don't know if XP natively supports wmav2?
