  1. I have an old Hauppauge wintv bt848 (I think)
capture board with no install disk.

Is there a source for the Hauppauge install files
    as an executable package?

I have done my homework: have the bt848
files from Hauppauge, but last time trying to
install through discovery while setting up
Windows 98SE I got screwey errors like

    Run Dll Error loading
    hcwutl32.dll
    system cannot find the file

plus some other vxd noise that hung my whole install
and I had to redo it.

I've also been the route ot bt tweakers which install them
selves in Virtual Dub to make it "better."

What I'm after is to just get the card working.

The install is fresh, the machine is dedicated to the
    task of capturing. Components are:

    Tyan Trinity motherboard
Intel PII 400 mHz slot one processor
    Turtle beach Santa Cruz
    Linksys NIC
    Western Digital 15G drive

I have an old version of V-dub (1.3) to install which is
supposed to be better for this older hardware.

No capture software or drivers are installed at this
    time.

I pretty much just install whatever Hauppauge lets me download on their website. I had a Win98 machine that ran fine with the old WinTV Go. The card is now in my XP machine and still works fine.

  3. I was directed to the Hauppauge site and downloaded
the driver called whql_349_240225.exe which I
don't know the difference from what I had put on before.

I've been going at this a couple weeks now so I
don't understand how a simple process gets
    complicated like this for video.

By this I mean I had all kinds of other Bt tweaker
stuff and long items to read from expert places like
Doom 9 and the card is still pants for set up.

I have a good guide for Virtual Dub to tune the image
but just the setup is giving me fits.

The WinTV application has a friendly interface but I
can't make it actually do much as far as tuning the
image which is color saturated, has jail bars and runs
    poorly.

Any suggestions for a rank noob on this? I like the
Lukes guide for V-dub because it has screen shots
that I can follow. Any guides with screen shot
how-to's seem to work the best for me.

If you're not completely sure which WinTV card you have, using the 'prodinfo' utility might help. You can find it at http://www.hauppage.com/pages/support/support.html .

kschang: Hmm... I hadn't thought of trying the old WinTV PCI card I have in one of my XP systems. It's still sitting in an old Win98 tower, with 64MB of RAM and a 4GB HD. Hauppage's site claims it should work with XP, though there might be some hassles with driver installation. It'd be nice to capture at a resolution higher than 160x120 for a change. :P

  5. So which capture programs and guides did you use
    successfully at those old resolutions?

The playback I have gotten (on a previous install) is
very poor. Theyt tell me the old Matrox video card
that's in there doesn't make a lot of difference.

So there must be a lot of work to do on the
capture program to fix color saturations, jail bars
    and other things I'm experiencing.

I have the best solution for old cards: the WinTV PVR2 usb.... It takes the load of your processor/memory, frees up a slot, has the usb interface, and you don't need to hassle for drivers. Mpeg2, features low-res to full D1, and no problems. No more cards for me!

Keep in mind that on my old Win98 machine I have an OLD NVIDIA TNT (Diamond Viper 550) card (and a Voodoo 2!) to keep the WinTV-GO! company. The video driver can have quite a bit to do with the balky setup.

I don't think Win98 supports USB2 which you need for the USB box.

  9. Way too many of the plug-in type capture devices require
Windows XP. They have software and I'd assume some sort
of one button record/capture is included

I'm not getting any more Windows OS'es. So I'm
sweating it out with Win98Se and things like Virtual Dub.

The Linux world prob'ly is getting some things together for
this, but my Linux adventure is on hold-- for a year or so
until they make it Lon-friendly. Considering what Linux is
after the 10 years of it's developemnt, better make that
    3 years.

Today I'm going to see if I can get the Hauppauge driver
executable installed after I burn it to disk on a different
    rig (this one.)

Following that, install Virtual Dub 1.3

Is there any need to put on Wintv2000 for functionality
of the Wintv card? Any one using the Wintv2000 prog.
for anything? I did not see that the Wintv prog could
do much, but I have yet to print out the manual.
