I have a Sony DV CAM deck ( DSR-1800) This deck does not have a firewire connection. I am looking for a capture device for Premiere Pro 2.0. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have been looking into Black Magic, AJA Xena, Matrox.

When I google the specs for your unit, it says you have firewire, composit, component, and more. I'm not understanding where the problem lies.. If it is with your pc, you need some sort of capture device or firewire card to connect your unit to. There are numerous capture devices, including Hauppage pci cards, usb 2.0 capture devices, firewire cards, semi-pro devices like the ADS Pyro , Canopus, or DAC devices. It all depends on what you want to do. What form to you want to capture in (Beta, avi, dv-avi, mpeg2, mpeg4)? Are you planning on doing extensive editing and effects?

Well...If he´s using a DSR1800 and Premiere Pro 2, you can assume he´s into some serious editing...and the way you feed(capture) video into a PC is not going to affect the editing as itself nor the quantity/quality of effects anyway.
It also kind of surprises me to learn that that deck doesn´t support firewire, but probably in the form of an add on card(mmm, I just looked it up, it doesn´t, ok...)...it ´s so "pro" that you have to buy separate boards(cards) depending on your needs (firewire/i-link, SDI, TBC remote, etc...)
Ok, so the problem lies in how to transfer your DVcam/miniDV footage OUT of your deck and INTO your PC(we´ll also assume your comp has a firewire card), given the hardware involved you can forget about the consumer/prosumer cards and devices mentioned. You´ll probably need something like the Canopus ADVC-500 (handles component video and balnced audio), the ADVC-1000 (if your DSR1800 deck has the SDI board) or the LAIRD LTM-5500B (also component video and bal. audio), the prices seem to go from 1500 to around 2000 dolars (but your DVcam deck is not cheap by any means)...and there´s a less expensive alternative, it seems; the datavideo DAC-10, also accepting component video(perhaps not balanced audio)
The AJA, BLACKMAGIC, etc.. products are also worth a look, especially if you are thinking HD.

Of course it supports Firewire (IEEE-1394). Just buy the option. It also optionally supports SDI. http://www.samysdv.com/dsr1800.htm

So tell us what you are trying to do. Are you editing DV format or uncompressed? What formats do you need to capture?

The AJA and Black Magic products target an uncompressed SDI (SMPTE 259M) environment. You are talking major RAID if you want to run in that league.

My deck does not have a firewire connection. I'm sure it could be upgraded; however, at the time I am not looking into doing that. I am looking to take multiple formats VHS, DV, Mini DV, DV cam etc. and bring them into the computer system for editing purposes. Currently becuase i am not looking at upgrading my deck I have been looking a Black Magic Multibridge and AJA Xena LS & their breakout box. Yes, as you can see I am going to spend some money on this project; however, it is for the company I am working for. Has anyone ever used these devices or have any suggestions to other forum sites that I can visit? Thanks.

    Uncompressed editing?
    What are you outputting to?

DVCAM, MiniDV will cost you $8-$40. Just get an interface card.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=IEEE-1394+PCI&S...&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

DV format capture devices are well reviewed. See Canopus, Data Video, etc.

I've used AJA's Kona on the Mac. Xena is a similar box for the PC. If you are doing broadcast release quality to SDI and expect to bump everything up to 4:2:2 then these boxes are medium quality. Look to Leitch, Tandberg and Thomson-Grass Valley if you have serious bucks.

You need to hire an engineer.

I'll be using Adobe Premiere 2.0. Outputting will be through the use of it most notibly flv format.

Why to you think you need to go uncompressed SDI to get to FLV?

Do a test uncompressed and DV format and see if to see a difference in the FLV result.

Of course, all this depends on the quality of the source. If the source is film or high end broadcast formats (e.g. DigiBeta, D1, or HD formats) then you might see a difference. But for VHS, MiniDV and DVCAM sources there is no reason to expect any big difference.

PS: The other arguement for an uncompressed server environment may be multiuser workflow productivity but to set this up properly you are well into 6 figures.
