Recently, my computer has been suffering under an inability to convert to *.WMV-files. I've tried several programs and all of them showed that my machine was unable to convert to this filetype. With these same pieces of software, I tried converting to other formats which did succeed. I believe that the mistake is codec-related, somehow..but I can't figure out what. What could be wrong and/or how could I fix it?

Windows movie maker ... output 3 minute clip's as dv avi ... pal or ntsc ... encode later using other tool's .

Super has wmv capabilities ... just depend's what output you need to convert too .

Those that come from server's may be liscenced wrapped ... without it , you are not going anywhere fast ...

And ulead video studio , 9se in ebay cheap .

It is why I tell people to avoid downloading video's from the net ... not only are they poor in quality ... but they call me to get them unstuck .

I have seen some absolute rubbish ... and they still want it on dvd .

It sounds like something is preventing the codec from operating properly.
Maybe post back with more details if not fixed.

  4. Use AVICodec on the source file and see if your PC has the correct codecs. If you must convert to WMV use Windows Media Encoder.

Also, you can try tools which rely on their own codecs and not Windows' codecs/DirectShow filters, such as ffmpeg and mencoder (or if you'd rather have a GUI over the command-line interface, there's SUPER (as Bjs mentioned, which is a frontend to ffmpeg, mencoder, x264, and others), MediaCoder (which I haven't tried), and a few others.)

So there is no way to output to WMV directly? This way is only gonna take more of my time and valuable disc space... :/

    Thanks for the replies, though!

    If in doubt, Google it.

I have, and sadly the problem was not resolved.
