Is there any possibility to get AC 3 sound after encoding DV AVI to MPEG 2. I've try with
TMPGEnc and CCE but sound after encoding is MPEG not AC 3. Is there any option to get AC 3 on the fly fith the same process of encoding , using TMPGEnc, CCE or MainConcept encoder.
    Regards.

no -- you have to use a ac3 encoder

Not on the fly, but you can extract the audio as a WAV file with VirtualDub (Mod) and run that through ffmpeggui to create a AC3 file. When you encode the AVI to MPEG-2, just do the video. Then you add the video and the AC3 audio when you author it.

are those ac3 files dvd compliant? i haven't been using the freeware ac3 encoders for a while, but i know a few years ago, they weren't.

if you're like me and have sony vegas, upgrade to a recent version (6 or one of the updates to it) and it will give you the ability to encode in ac3 (using the built in Soft Encode engine).

It seems to be 80%+ compliant or better. It is at least more compliant than MPEG-1 Layer2 for NTSC video. Never had any problems with the AC3 it produces. I'm sure there are better encoders, but not for free.

Of course it only does 2 channel, but if I have 5.1, I just use that when authoring.

ffmpeg supports 5.1 encoding. Output has been compliant for some time now and I believe there was a bug with volume that is now fixed. Still the issue of the encoder not being tuned though. As said though, basically the only free encoder.

Just open ffmepggui then browse to and open your video file and then save it no need to use vdub to extract and it only takes a few min.

QuEnc will create an MPG file with MPEG2 Video and AC3 audio on the fly.

Edit: But I think it only does 2-channel.

vegas only has ac3 encoding if you buy DVDA along with it ...... also - vegas does not use the older soft encode sonic foundry encoder, it was re-written from the ground up ...

    Regards.
You are using the wrong TMPGEnc. I use TMPGEnc Xpress with their AC3 plugin to encode with AC3 (2Channel) Same plugin works with their DVD Author program so That can also author a mpeg with mp2 sound into a DVD with AC3. I understand that the new versions come with the AC3 support. I like using TMPGEnc 3 Xpress. It makes it a no brainer for me. I just add the Video, choose a single layer or dual layer disc size for the output file and it sets the bitrate for me. I can choose speed or quality (1 pass or 2 pass) and I can edit the source video before encoding. I then add it to their DVD author program and done. And of course I can batch encode overnight too.

For my needs, simple, easy, Good Quality, decent speed. So it fits my needs and helps simplify what I do on the computer. Yes I could use CCE Basic, avisynth tweak, filter, However I justy want to get it done and move on.
