So basically I'm going to capture 10 gigs worth of video and I want to convert that to a VCD and remove the commercials. It's too big to cut up the original file since the resulting files will be too big (I don't have 20 free gigs) so if I convert it to VCD and then cut it up and join it will this cause problems? I thought I heard something about having to cut it at certain key frames. I'd likely be doing this with TMPGEnc. Can I otherwise select a range when inputing the files to take the commercials out that way somehow?

  2. Chop the commercials using Virtual Dub. Then frameserve it directly to TMPGenc. That avoids the additional file. To Frameserve, do this:

(I am at work, so I am going on memory here)

Start Virtual Dub's startup panel (the other exe in VirtualDub's directory). It launches and gives you a menu of sorts.

Choose "install Frameserve handler" or something close to that.

Then choose "launch Virtual Dub". Edit your commercials as you see fit. Do some filters while you're there.

Then at the point where you'd normally File|Save, instead do a File|Start Frame Serving

Pick your file name, then pick another filename (don't forget to add the extension because Virtual Dub will not), '.fs' I think.

Now, launch TMPGenc and on your source file choose your '.fs' file (you have to "view all types" to see it).

    Encode as usual.

PS. Please forgive me if I left out a step. I am at work and going by memory here.

I've done frame serving before. That's what I usually do since I've subbed a lot of stuff and my capture card splits it into 2gig files. So you're saying I can just select the range with vdub before actually serving it and edit the commercials out like that? I'll go check that out.

Ah! Delete frames works great. That's exactly what I wanted. Thanks.

  5. Furthermore, you can append another avi and frameserve the entire set. I sometimes do this if I have to capture a show in several pieces due to the filesize limitation.
