I recently purchased a JVC DR-MH30 DVD recorder. I hooked my Direct TV satellite receiver through the DVD's L-1 inputs. That works fine; video and audio signals gets recorded, and the audio/video comes from the output through the TV.
But when I try to connect either my VCR or analog cassette recorder through the L-2 or F-1 stereo inputs of the DVD recorder, nothing comes through the any of the outputs or is recorded. I want to record onto DVD disc some home audio-only cassette recordings, and some home video recordings. But I cannot figure out the correct way to connect the components, I guess. (Or is there some internal anti-copying device preventing me from doing this?) I'm a novice at all this, mind you.
I tried stereo RCAs from the cassette decks out to the DVD's L-2 input and got nothing. Same with the VCR's output to the DVD's L-2 or F-1 inputs. Nada.

Did you select the L2 input as the one from which you want to record? The recorder does not sense which input has a signal. It is manually selected.

Yes. I tried selecting L2, using the channel selector on the remote.

try hooking your direct tv cable to the(in) on your vcr..then connect a cable to the (out) on your vcr to the (in) on your recorder..then connect a cable from the (out) on your recorder to your tv..it worked for me..
